Notes – Philippians 3

Philippians 3 – Press Toward the Goal

“That I may know Him and the power of His resurrection…” (Philippians 3:10, NKJV)
“I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.” (v. 14)

🔍 CAPTURE THE SCENE (What do I see?)

  • Paul warns against false teachers who promote legalism
  • He reflects on his impressive Jewish credentials — then counts them as loss
  • He expresses a deep passion to know Christ personally and powerfully
  • Paul makes it clear: he hasn’t arrived — he’s pressing forward
  • We are called to follow his example and live as citizens of heaven

📖 ANALYZE THE MESSAGE (What does it mean?)

1. Beware of Legalism (vv. 1–3)

“Beware of dogs… evil workers… mutilation!”
Paul uses strong words for false teachers promoting circumcision
“We are the circumcision… who worship God in the Spirit…”
True believers boast in Christ alone — not rituals or achievements

2. Paul’s Resume: Counted as Loss (vv. 4–9)

“If anyone… has confidence in the flesh, I more so…”
Paul lists his religious credentials — tribe, law-keeping, zeal
“But what things were gain to me, these I have counted loss for Christ.”
He traded religion for a relationship
“Not having my own righteousness… but that which is through faith in Christ”

3. Knowing Christ at Any Cost (vv. 10–11)

“That I may know Him and the power of His resurrection…”
Paul desires to know Jesus, not just facts about Him
“And the fellowship of His sufferings…”
To share in Christ’s suffering is to become more like Him
“…if, by any means, I may attain to the resurrection from the dead”

4. Pressing Onward, Not Backward (vv. 12–16)

“Not that I have already attained… but I press on…”
Paul is still growing — focused on what lies ahead
“Forgetting those things which are behind…”
We don’t live in the past — we strain forward
“Let us… have this mind” — the mature keep moving forward

5. Heavenly Citizenship (vv. 17–21)

“Brethren, join in following my example…”
Paul invites them to imitate his pursuit of Christ
“For our citizenship is in heaven…”
We wait for Jesus’ return, when He will transform our bodies
“According to the working by which He is able even to subdue all things to Himself.”

🙌 EXECUTE (So what? How does this affect my life?)

Principle: Let go of past confidence and present distractions to pursue Christ above all.

  1. Reject Self-Righteousness
Don’t trust in your achievements — trust in Christ alone

Knowing Christ deeply is worth everything you give up
  3. Forget the Past, Focus Forward
Don’t get stuck in regret or pride — keep pressing on
