Notes – 2 Timothy 1

2 Timothy 1 – Boldness, Faith, and Guarding the Gospel

“God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” (2 Timothy 1:7, NKJV)
“Hold fast the pattern of sound words… in faith and love which are in Christ Jesus.” (v. 13)

🔍 CAPTURE THE SCENE (What do I see?)

  • Paul writes this second letter from prison, likely near the end of his life
  • He encourages Timothy to stay strongbold, and faithful to his calling
  • He recalls Timothy’s spiritual heritage, urges him to fan the flame of his gift, and not to be ashamed of suffering for the gospel
  • A deep focus on guarding the gospel, despite hardship and betrayal

📖 ANALYZE THE MESSAGE (What does it mean?)

1. A Legacy of Faith (vv. 1–5)

“To Timothy, a beloved son…”
Paul’s love for Timothy is personal and pastoral
“I thank God… that without ceasing I remember you in my prayers…”
Paul prays constantly for his spiritual son
“I call to remembrance the genuine faith… which dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice…”
Faith can be passed down, and Timothy had a strong spiritual legacy

2. Fan into Flame Your Gift (vv. 6–7)

“Stir up the gift of God which is in you…”
Don’t let your calling grow cold — fan it into full flame
“God has not given us a spirit of fear…”
Fear is not from God — boldness, love, and clarity are
“But of power and of love and of a sound mind.”
God equips His people with courage, compassion, and clear thinking

3. Suffer Boldly for the Gospel (vv. 8–12)

“Do not be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord… nor of me His prisoner…”
Paul calls Timothy to be unashamed, even in the face of persecution
“Share with me in the sufferings for the gospel…”
Gospel work involves cost and courage
“Who has saved us and called us with a holy calling…”
God’s call is not based on works but on grace and purpose
“Who has abolished death and brought life and immortality to light…”
Christ has conquered death — we live with eternal hope
“I am not ashamed… I know whom I have believed…”
Confidence in Christ allows us to endure anything

4. Guard What Has Been Entrusted (vv. 13–18)

“Hold fast the pattern of sound words…”
Stick closely to sound doctrine — don’t drift
“By the Holy Spirit… keep that good thing which was committed to you.”
The gospel is a sacred trust — guard it with help from the Spirit
“This you know, that all those in Asia have turned away from me…”
Even Paul experienced betrayal and abandonment
“The Lord grant mercy to the household of Onesiphorus…”
One man stood out in his loyalty — even seeking Paul in prison
