Notes – 1 Corinthians 3

1 Corinthians 3 – God’s Field and God’s Building

“For we are God’s fellow workers; you are God’s field, you are God’s building.” (1 Corinthians 3:9, NKJV)
“For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.” (v. 11)

🔍 CAPTURE THE SCENE (What do I see?)

  • Paul confronts the immaturity of the Corinthian church
  • He explains the difference between spiritual and fleshly believers
  • The church is not built by men, but by God, using workers like Paul and Apollos
  • Believers are described as God’s field and God’s temple
  • He warns against building on the foundation of Christ with worthless materials
  • Human boasting is foolish — all things are from God, for God

📖 ANALYZE THE MESSAGE (What does it mean?)

1. Spiritual Infants and Divisions (vv. 1–4)

“I fed you with milk and not with solid food…”
They were not ready for deeper teaching — still acting fleshly
“For where there are envy, strife, and divisions… are you not behaving like mere men?”
Division over teachers (Paul, Apollos) is a sign of immaturity

2. God Gives the Growth (vv. 5–9)

“Who then is Paul… but ministers through whom you believed…”
Paul and Apollos are just servants — not saviors
“I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the increase.”
Only God causes spiritual growth — no man can take credit
“You are God’s field, you are God’s building.”
The church belongs to God — not to any pastor or leader

3. Build Carefully on Christ (vv. 10–15)

“Let each one take heed how he builds…”
The foundation is Christ alone — leaders must build with care
“Gold, silver, precious stones… or wood, hay, straw”
Our work will be tested by fire — only eternal things remain
“If anyone’s work is burned, he will suffer loss; but he himself will be saved…”
You can be saved yet waste your life by building the wrong way

4. You Are God’s Temple (vv. 16–17)

“Do you not know that you are the temple of God…?”
God’s Spirit dwells in the church (corporately)
“If anyone defiles the temple of God, God will destroy him.”
This is a serious warning to those who divide or damage the church

5. Let No One Boast in Men (vv. 18–23)

“Let no one deceive himself… become a fool that he may become wise.”
God’s wisdom contradicts worldly pride
“Let no one boast in men… For all things are yours…”
Everything belongs to those who are in Christ
“And you are Christ’s, and Christ is God’s.”
That’s our true identity — not followers of men, but followers of Christ

🔁 COMPARE THIS CHAPTER WITH THE REST OF SCRIPTURE

  • Building on the Right Foundation:
    • Matthew 7:24–27 – Wise man builds on the rock
    • Ephesians 2:20 – Built on the foundation of apostles and prophets, with Christ as cornerstone
  • God’s Growth, Not Man’s Glory:
    • John 15:5 – Apart from Me you can do nothing
    • Psalm 127:1 – Unless the Lord builds the house…
  • The Church as God’s Temple:
    • 1 Peter 2:5 – Living stones being built into a spiritual house
    • 2 Corinthians 6:16 – You are the temple of the living God

🙌 EXECUTE (So what? How does this affect my life?)

Principle: Build your life on Christ alone, live in unity, and work with eternity in view.

  1. Grow Up Spiritually
Don’t stay stuck in immaturity — hunger for deeper truths
  2. Stop Glorifying Men
Teachers are servants, not saviors — follow Jesus
  3. Invest in What Lasts
Build with truth, love, and obedience — not fluff that burns
  4. Protect the Church
Be a peacemaker, not a divider — God takes His temple seriously
