Notes – 1 Corinthians 4

1 Corinthians 4 – Servants and Stewards

“Let a man so consider us, as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God.” (1 Corinthians 4:1, NKJV)
“Moreover it is required in stewards that one be found faithful.” (v. 2)
“For the kingdom of God is not in word but in power.” (v. 20)

🔍 CAPTURE THE SCENE (What do I see?)

  • Paul describes apostles as servants and stewards under Christ
  • He calls for faithfulness in handling God’s Word, not applause from people
  • He rebukes the Corinthians for acting proud and self-sufficient
  • Paul contrasts their pride with the suffering and humility of the apostles
  • He reminds them of his spiritual fatherhood and loving discipline
  • Paul warns that when he comes, it won’t be with words — it will be with authority and truth

📖 ANALYZE THE MESSAGE (What does it mean?)

1. Stewards, Not Celebrities (vv. 1–5)

“Let a man so consider us…”
Paul wants to be seen not as a star, but as a servant and steward
“It is required… that one be found faithful.”
Success in ministry isn’t about popularity, but faithfulness
“Judge nothing before the time…”
God will reveal true motives and give praise to the faithful

2. Apostolic Humility vs. Corinthian Pride (vv. 6–13)

“You are already full! You are already rich!”
Paul uses sarcasm to expose their inflated self-view
“We have been made a spectacle… fools for Christ…”
True apostles suffer, are dishonored, and live with deep sacrifice
“We labor… being reviled, we bless… being persecuted, we endure…”
This is the true mark of spiritual leadership — servant-hearted suffering

3. Paul’s Spiritual Fatherhood (vv. 14–17)

“I do not write these things to shame you, but… to warn you.”
Paul is correcting in love, not mocking them
“For though you might have ten thousand instructors… yet you do not have many fathers.”
He planted the church — he’s invested as a father, not just a teacher
“Imitate me.”
A bold call to follow Christ by following Paul’s example
“For this reason I have sent Timothy…”
Timothy would reinforce Paul’s ways and teaching

4. Power vs. Talk (vv. 18–21)

“Some are puffed up…”
They were acting arrogant, assuming Paul wouldn’t show up
“The kingdom of God is not in word but in power.”
Real faith shows up in fruit, not just talk
“Shall I come to you with a rod, or in love and a spirit of gentleness?”
Paul’s correction is coming — the tone will depend on their response

🔁 COMPARE THIS CHAPTER WITH THE REST OF SCRIPTURE

  • Servanthood:
    • Matthew 23:11 – The greatest among you shall be your servant
    • Mark 10:45 – The Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve
  • Discipline and Correction:
    • Hebrews 12:6 – Whom the Lord loves He disciplines
    • Proverbs 3:11–12 – Do not despise the Lord’s correction
  • Spiritual Authority:
    • 2 Timothy 2:24–25 – Correct with gentleness
    • Titus 2:15 – Rebuke with all authority

🙌 EXECUTE (So what? How does this affect my life?)

Principle: Faithfulness, humility, and spiritual integrity—not applause—define a servant of Christ.

  1. Be Faithful, Not Flashy
Whether leading or following, aim to honor God, not impress people
  2. Stay Humble in Ministry
If Paul the apostle was called a fool and suffered, we’re not above that
  3. Welcome Godly Correction
See spiritual fathers and mentors as gifts, not threats
  4. Let Your Life Show Real Power
The kingdom is more than words — let fruit and faith prove your walk
