1 Corinthians 2 – The Wisdom of the Spirit

“For I determined not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified.” (1 Corinthians 2:2, NKJV)
“But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit.” (v. 10)
“We have the mind of Christ.” (v. 16)
🔍 CAPTURE THE SCENE (What do I see?)
- Paul reminds the Corinthians that his message and preaching were simple, focused on Christ
- He deliberately avoids eloquence or flashy wisdom
- True wisdom is spiritual — revealed by the Holy Spirit, not discovered by human intellect
- The natural man (without the Spirit) cannot grasp the things of God
- Believers, through the Spirit, can discern spiritual truths and even possess the mind of Christ
📖 ANALYZE THE MESSAGE (What does it mean?)
1. Christ Alone at the Center (vv. 1–5)
“I did not come with excellence of speech or wisdom…”
Paul chose simplicity over performance — he relied on the power of the Spirit, not persuasion
“That your faith should not be in the wisdom of men but in the power of God.”
Only the cross has the power to save and sustain us
2. God’s Hidden Wisdom (vv. 6–9)
“We speak wisdom… not of this age… but the hidden wisdom which God ordained before the ages…”
The gospel is divine wisdom, planned before time
“Had they known, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.”
Human rulers misunderstood it — but it was God’s plan all along
“Eye has not seen… nor ear heard… the things God has prepared…”
This verse points to the unimaginable riches of knowing God through the Spirit
3. Revealed by the Spirit (vv. 10–13)
“God has revealed them to us through His Spirit.”
Only the Holy Spirit can reveal the deep things of God
“No one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God.”
Just like no one knows your thoughts but you — only the Spirit knows God’s
“We have received… the Spirit who is from God…”
The Spirit enables us to understand and teach spiritual truth
4. Spiritual Discernment (vv. 14–16)
“The natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God…”
Without the Spirit, people think the gospel is foolish
“He who is spiritual judges all things…”
The Spirit-filled believer can discern what’s true, eternal, and godly
“We have the mind of Christ.”
Because we have the Spirit, we can think like Jesus
