Matthew 8 – Authority Unleashed: Healing, Faith, and the Fear of God

🔍 CAPTURE THE SCENE (What Do I See?)
- Jesus comes down from the mountain—and immediately begins healing the sick.
- He touches and heals a leper, breaking social and religious boundaries.
- A Roman centurion’s servant is healed from afar—because of the man’s great faith.
- Jesus heals Peter’s mother-in-law and many others, fulfilling Isaiah’s prophecy.
- When crowds gather, He challenges would-be followers: count the cost of following Him.
- A sudden storm hits at sea—Jesus calms it with a word.
- On the other side, two demon-possessed men confront Him—He casts the demons into pigs.
- The townspeople ask Jesus to leave, disturbed by His power.
📖 ANALYZE THE MESSAGE (What Does It Mean?)
1. Jesus Heals a Leper (vv. 1–4)
- Leprosy = a picture of sin: defiling, isolating, incurable by man.
- Jesus touches the untouchable—and heals instantly.
- He sends the man to the priest to be restored to the community (Leviticus 14).
2. The Centurion’s Faith (vv. 5–13)
- A Roman military officer asks Jesus to just speak a word—he believes in Jesus’ authority.
- Jesus marvels: “I have not found such great faith, not even in Israel!”
- This foreshadows Gentiles entering the kingdom while many Jews reject it.
3. Healing in Peter’s House (vv. 14–17)
- Jesus heals Peter’s mother-in-law—then others flock to Him.
- Isaiah 53:4 fulfilled: He bore our sicknesses.
4. The Cost of Discipleship (vv. 18–22)
- One scribe wants to follow—but Jesus warns: “The Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head.”
- Another man wants to delay following—Jesus responds, “Let the dead bury their own dead.”
- Following Jesus costs comfort, convenience, and control.
5. Jesus Calms the Storm (vv. 23–27)
- A great tempest arises—Jesus is asleep.
- The disciples panic, thinking they will perish.
- Jesus rebukes them: “Why are you fearful, O you of little faith?”
- He calms the storm with a word—and the sea obeys.
6. Deliverance from Demons (vv. 28–34)
- Two demon-possessed men confront Jesus in the country of the Gadarenes.
- The demons beg to enter pigs—Jesus grants it, and the pigs plunge into the sea.
- The town begs Jesus to leave—they’re more afraid of His power than the possessed men.

- The centurion believed without proof—faith doesn’t need physical confirmation.

- Jesus doesn’t sugarcoat discipleship—it demands all-in obedience.
- Cry Out in the Storms—but Don’t Forget Who’s in the Boat
- Fear may arise, but Jesus is near—and nothing is stronger than His Word.
- Don’t Fear His Power—Surrender to It
- Like the Gadarenes, some push Him away because they fear change.
- But deliverance is worth it—even if it costs your comfort.
