Notes – Matthew 7

Matthew 7 – The Narrow Way, True Fruit, and a Firm Foundation

“Enter by the narrow gate…” (Matthew 7:13, NKJV)
“By their fruits you will know them.” (v. 20)
“Whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them… I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock.” (v. 24)

🔍 CAPTURE THE SCENE (What Do I See?)

  • Jesus warns against hypocritical judgment, calling us to deal with our own sin first.
  • He teaches about asking, seeking, and knocking—promising God’s faithful response.
  • He sums up godly living in the Golden Rule: “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.”
  • He warns of two gates: wide and narrow. One leads to destruction, the other to life.
  • False prophets are likened to wolves in sheep’s clothing—discern them by their fruit.
  • Jesus gives a chilling warning: “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom.”
  • He ends with a parable: two builders, two houses—one on rock, one on sand.

📖 ANALYZE THE MESSAGE (What Does It Mean?)

1. Righteous Judging (vv. 1–6)

  • “Judge not” doesn’t mean never judge—it means don’t judge hypocritically.
  • First, remove the plank in your own eye.
  • Then you can help others with humility and clarity.
  • Be discerning—don’t cast “pearls before swine” (truth to those who mock it).

2. Persistent Prayer (vv. 7–11)

  • Jesus calls us to ask, seek, knock—a rising scale of persistence.
  • God is a good Father—if we ask for bread, He won’t give a stone.
  • Prayer is relational, not mechanical.

3. The Golden Rule (v. 12)

  • This principle sums up the Law and the Prophets.
  • True righteousness considers how our actions affect others.

4. Two Gates, Two Roads (vv. 13–14)

  • The narrow gate leads to life—few find it.
  • The broad road is easy and popular—but ends in destruction.
  • The way of Christ is countercultural and costly, but eternally rewarding.

5. False Prophets and True Fruit (vv. 15–20)

  • Look past words and charisma—inspect fruit: character, doctrine, and effect.
  • Wolves in sheep’s clothing are dangerous—they blend in but devour.

6. “Lord, Lord” and True Discipleship (vv. 21–23)

  • Mere profession is not enough—obedience is the evidence of true faith.
  • Many will claim miracles, ministries, or church activity—but Jesus will say, “I never knew you.”

7. The Two Builders (vv. 24–27)

  • Hearing Jesus’ words without obedience = building on sand.
  • Obedience is the difference between collapse and standing firm when storms hit.
  • The wise build on rock—the Word lived out.

🔄 COMPARE WITH THE REST OF SCRIPTURE

  • James 1:22 – “Be doers of the word, and not hearers only.”
  • Galatians 5:22–23 – Fruit of the Spirit vs. fruit of the flesh.
  • Proverbs 14:12 – “There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death.”
  • 1 John 2:3–6 – Knowing God = keeping His commandments.
  • Luke 6:46 – “Why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do the things which I say?”

🛠 EXECUTE – How Does This Affect My Life?

Key Principle: Jesus doesn’t just want your words—He wants your life. True discipleship is proven in obedience, discernment, love, and unwavering trust in His Word.

  1. Examine Yourself Before You Examine Others
    • Hypocritical judgment blinds us.
    • Deal with your heart before calling out someone else’s.
  2. Pray Boldly, Trust Deeply
    • Ask, seek, knock. He hears. He responds.
    • Trust Him to give what’s best—even when it’s not what you expected.
  3. Choose the Narrow Way
    • If everyone is doing it, it’s likely not the narrow path.
    • Stand firm in truth—even if you stand alone.
  4. Inspect the Fruit
    • Not all who look spiritual are godly.
    • Discern with Scripture. Stay rooted in truth.
  5. Build to Last
    • Storms are coming. Only those who hear AND obey will stand.
    • Jesus must be your foundation, not just your inspiration.
