Matthew 1 – The King Has Come: Genealogy, Grace, and God With Us
“And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name JESUS, for He will save His people from their sins.” (Matthew 1:21, NKJV)
“Behold, the virgin shall be with child… and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which is translated, “God with us.” (v. 23)
🔍 CAPTURE THE SCENE (What Do I See?)
- Verses 1–17: The genealogy of Jesus Christ, son of David, son of Abraham.
- It includes 42 generations, broken into three sets of 14.
- Notably includes women—Tamar, Rahab, Ruth, Bathsheba—and even Gentiles and sinners.
- Verses 18–25: The birth of Jesus Christ through Mary, a virgin, betrothed to Joseph.
- Joseph discovers her pregnancy and quietly plans to divorce her.
- An angel appears in a dream, telling him the child is from the Holy Spirit.
- The angel gives His name—JESUS, meaning “The Lord saves.”
- This fulfills Isaiah 7:14: “Behold, the virgin shall conceive…”
📖 ANALYZE THE MESSAGE (What Does It Mean?)
1. Jesus Is the Promised King (vv. 1–17)
- The genealogy legally qualifies Jesus as heir to David’s throne.
- He is also the fulfillment of the Abrahamic Covenant, through whom all nations are blessed.
- God includes unexpected people in His plan—Gentiles, women, and sinners:
- Tamar (Genesis 38) – deception and redemption.
- Rahab (Joshua 2) – a prostitute saved by faith.
- Ruth – a Moabite redeemed by Boaz.
- Bathsheba – involved in David’s darkest sin.
2. Jesus Is Born of the Spirit, Not Man (vv. 18–21)
- Mary was a virgin, and her pregnancy came through the Holy Spirit.
- Joseph, a just man, is visited by an angelic messenger.
- The angel confirms: “He will save His people from their sins.”
- This sets Jesus apart from any earthly king—His mission is eternal salvation.
3. Immanuel: God With Us (vv. 22–25)
- Matthew connects this moment to Isaiah’s prophecy (Isaiah 7:14).
- Jesus is not just a Savior—He is God in the flesh.
- Joseph obeys and takes Mary as his wife, but keeps her a virgin until Jesus is born.
