Notes – Matthew 2

Matthew 2 – The King Is Born: Worship, Warning, and Warfare

“Where is He who has been born King of the Jews?” (Matthew 2:2, NKJV)
“Out of Egypt I called My Son.” (v. 15)

🔍 CAPTURE THE SCENE (What Do I See?)

  • Wise men (Magi) from the East arrive in Jerusalem, asking about the newborn King.
  • This disturbs King Herod, who gathers religious leaders to ask where the Christ would be born.
  • They cite Micah 5:2: Bethlehem in Judah.
  • Herod secretly meets the Magi and tells them to report back—but he plans to kill the child.
  • The Magi follow the star, rejoice, and worship Jesus, offering gold, frankincense, and myrrh.
  • Warned in a dream, they don’t return to Herod.
  • Joseph is warned in a dream to flee to Egypt—he obeys immediately.
  • After Herod realizes he was deceived, he orders the slaughter of all boys under two in Bethlehem.
  • Joseph returns with Mary and Jesus after Herod’s death, eventually settling in Nazareth.

📖 ANALYZE THE MESSAGE (What Does It Mean?)

1. Gentiles Seek the King (vv. 1–12)

  • The Magi were likely Persian astrologers, familiar with Daniel’s writings.
  • They represent the first Gentiles to worship Christ, showing that His kingdom is global.
  • Their gifts point to Jesus’ identity:
    • Gold – Kingship
    • Frankincense – Deity/priesthood
    • Myrrh – Death/burial

2. Herod’s Fearful Rage (vv. 3–8, 16–18)

  • Herod, a paranoid ruler, feels threatened by a baby.
  • His reaction fulfills Jeremiah’s prophecy (Jer. 31:15) of Rachel weeping for her children.
  • This shows how spiritual darkness resists the Light.

3. Prophecy Fulfilled in Flight (vv. 13–15, 19–23)

  • Joseph flees to Egypt, fulfilling Hosea 11:1 – “Out of Egypt I called My Son.”
  • After Herod’s death, they return—but due to danger from Herod’s son, Joseph goes to Nazareth.
  • This fulfills what was spoken by the prophets: “He shall be called a Nazarene.”

🔄 COMPARE WITH THE REST OF SCRIPTURE

  • Jesus as True King:
    • Isaiah 9:6 – “Unto us a Child is born… and the government will be upon His shoulder.”
    • Psalm 2 – The nations rage, but the Son is enthroned.
  • Gifts of the Magi & Christ’s Identity:
    • Revelation 1:5 – Jesus is Prophet, Priest, and King.
    • John 19:39 – Myrrh used in His burial.
  • Escape to Egypt & Divine Protection:
    • Exodus 1–2 – God also preserved Moses from a king’s massacre.
    • Revelation 12:4–6 – A woman (Israel) gives birth, and the child is protected from the dragon.

🛠 EXECUTE – How Does This Affect My Life?

Key Principle: Jesus’ birth wasn’t just a silent night—it was a spiritual battleground. But no earthly king, demon, or death decree can stop God’s promise from being fulfilled.

  1. God Protects His Promises
    • Dreams, angels, and divine warnings protected Jesus.
    • If God watches over His Son, He surely watches over you.
  2. Wise Still Seek Him
    • The Magi traveled far, following a light in the dark.
    • What are you willing to pursue in order to worship the King?
  3. Jesus Provokes a Response
    • Herod saw Jesus as a threat; the wise men saw Him as worthy of worship.
    • You’re either resisting His reign—or surrendering to it.
  4. God Works Through the Unexpected
    • Egypt, Nazareth—these are not the expected places for a King.
    • But God writes His story in surprising places through faithful obedience.
  5. Your Obedience Creates Protection
    • Joseph obeyed immediately—he didn’t delay.
    • What protective blessings are you missing by hesitating to obey?
