Notes – Philippians 1

Philippians 1 – Joy in Chains

“Being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it…” (Philippians 1:6, NKJV)
“To live is Christ, and to die is gain.” (v. 21)

🔍 CAPTURE THE SCENE (What do I see?)

  • Paul writes from prison in Rome, yet overflows with joy and gratitude
  • He prays for the Philippians’ growth in love and discernment
  • His chains have actually advanced the gospel
  • Some preach Christ with wrong motives — but Paul rejoices either way
  • He declares his bold hope in life or death: Christ is everything
  • Paul urges them to stand firm and suffer courageously

📖 ANALYZE THE MESSAGE (What does it mean?)

1. Grateful Partnership (vv. 1–11)

“I thank my God upon every remembrance of you…”
Paul has a deep bond with the Philippians — they supported his ministry
“He who began a good work in you will complete it…”
Confidence in God’s faithfulness fuels his joy
“That your love may abound still more… with all discernment.”
Paul prays for wise, fruitful, loving believers

2. Gospel Advance Through Chains (vv. 12–18)

“The things which happened to me have actually turned out for the furtherance of the gospel.”
His imprisonment has made the gospel known in Caesar’s household
Others are emboldened to preach
Even if some preach from envy, Paul says:
“Christ is preached… in this I rejoice.”

3. Christ Magnified, Life or Death (vv. 19–26)

“According to my earnest expectation and hope… Christ will be magnified in my body…”
Paul is ready for either outcome — release or execution
“To live is Christ, and to die is gain.”

  • Living means fruitful work
  • Dying means being with Christ — which is far better
Yet he believes he’ll remain, for their progress and joy

4. Live Worthy of the Gospel (vv. 27–30)

“Let your conduct be worthy of the gospel of Christ…”
Paul urges unity, courage, and endurance
“Not terrified… which is to them a proof of perdition, but to you of salvation…”
Suffering is not a setback — it’s a privilege
“To you it has been granted… not only to believe in Him, but also to suffer for His sake.”
