Notes – John 21

John 21 – Do You Love Me? Follow Me.

“Jesus said to him, ‘Feed My sheep.’” (John 21:17, NKJV)

🔍 CAPTURE THE SCENE (What do I see?)

After the resurrection, Jesus appears again—this time on the shores of Galilee. Seven disciples go fishing. They catch nothing until Jesus shows up and performs a miracle. What follows is one of the most intimate and powerful scenes in the Bible.

  • PeterThomasNathanaelJames and John, and two others go fishing.
  • They fish all night and catch nothing.
  • At dawn, Jesus stands on the shore, but they don’t recognize Him.
  • He says, “Cast the net on the right side.” They do—and catch 153 large fish.
  • John says, “It is the Lord!” Peter jumps into the sea to reach Him.
  • They find breakfast already prepared—fish and bread.
  • Jesus invites them: “Come and eat breakfast.”
  • No one dares ask who He is—they know it’s Him.
  • Jesus takes bread and fish and gives it to them—a reminder of past miracles.
  • After breakfast, Jesus restores Peter with three questions:“Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me?”
  • Peter affirms his love each time, and Jesus replies:“Feed My lambs. Tend My sheep. Feed My sheep.”
  • Jesus tells Peter about the kind of death he will die—and then says,“Follow Me.”
  • Peter asks about John. Jesus replies:“If I will that he remain till I come, what is that to you? You follow Me.”
  • John ends the Gospel by reminding us that Jesus did many more things, but this book was written so we might believe.

📖 ANALYZE THE MESSAGE (What does it mean?)

  1. Without Jesus, We Labor in Vain (vv. 1–6)
The disciples fish all night and catch nothing—until Jesus directs them. With His word, the net overflows. Obedience matters.
  2. Jesus Knows Our Needs—And Serves Anyway (vv. 7–14)
He makes breakfast. The risen King serves His friends. He meets spiritual and physical needs.
  3. Restoration Is Personal and Intentional (vv. 15–17)
Jesus asks Peter three times, paralleling Peter’s three denials. But He doesn’t shame him—He restores and recommissions him.
  4. Love Leads to Action
Jesus connects love with mission:“Do you love Me? Then feed My sheep.”
    Loving Jesus means serving others.
  5. Your Calling Is Your Own (vv. 20–23)
When Peter asks about John, Jesus redirects him:“What is that to you? You follow Me.”
Don’t compare callings—walk your own path faithfully.

🙌 EXECUTE (So what? How does this affect my life?)

Principle: Jesus doesn’t just forgive—He restores. And He calls you to follow, love, and serve—not in comparison to others, but in personal obedience.

  1. Let Jesus Meet You in Failure
Peter denied Him, then went fishing—but Jesus showed up again. He’ll meet you in your frustration too.
  2. Don’t Let Guilt Stop You—Jesus Wants to Restore You
If you’ve fallen, Jesus doesn’t discard you. He restores you—and calls you back to purpose.
  3. Obedience Brings Overflow
One word from Jesus changed everything. When you listen and act, you will bear fruit.
  4. Love Jesus by Serving Others
If you say you love Him, tend His sheep. Care for people. Teach. Feed. Encourage.
  5. Focus on Your Race, Not Theirs
Jesus has a path for you. Don’t get distracted by someone else’s assignment. Just follow.
