John 20 – The Risen Savior

“He is not here, for He is risen, as He said.” (Matthew 28:6, cross-reference)
“Peace to you! As the Father has sent Me, I also send you.” (John 20:21, NKJV)
🔍 CAPTURE THE SCENE (What do I see?)
It’s the first day of the week, early in the morning. The tomb is empty. The grave clothes are neatly folded. Confusion turns to belief, fear turns to joy, and doubt turns into worship.
- Mary Magdalene visits the tomb and sees the stone rolled away.
- She runs to Peter and John—“They have taken the Lord!”
- Peter and John run to the tomb. John arrives first but waits; Peter enters.
- They see the linen cloths lying and the face cloth folded.
- John believes—though they still don’t fully understand the resurrection.
- Mary remains outside the tomb, weeping.
- She sees two angels, then turns and sees Jesus—but doesn’t recognize Him at first.
- Jesus says, “Mary!”—and she recognizes His voice.
- Jesus tells her not to cling to Him, for He hasn’t ascended yet.
- Mary tells the disciples: “I have seen the Lord!”
- That evening, Jesus appears to the disciples in a locked room.
- He says, “Peace be with you” and shows them His hands and side.
- He breathes on them: “Receive the Holy Spirit.”
- Thomas wasn’t there and refuses to believe.
- Eight days later, Jesus appears again. Thomas sees, touches, and declares:“My Lord and my God!”
- Jesus says:“Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”
- John closes with this purpose statement:“These are written that you may believe… and have life in His name.”
📖 ANALYZE THE MESSAGE (What does it mean?)
- The Empty Tomb Was Just the Beginning (vv. 1–10)
The resurrection is real—but it took time for the disciples to fully grasp it. The grave clothes were left behind—Jesus had truly risen. - Jesus Calls Us by Name (vv. 11–18)
Mary didn’t recognize Jesus until He said her name. His voice is personal—He knows His sheep (John 10:3). - Jesus Brings Peace and Purpose (vv. 19–23)
He appears in the locked room and says, “Peace be with you.” Then He commissions them:“As the Father sent Me, I send you.” - Doubt Meets Grace (vv. 24–29)
Thomas wasn’t rebuked—Jesus met him where he was. But He honors faith without sight even more. - Why This Gospel Was Written (vv. 30–31)
John clearly tells us: This book was written so we would believe and have eternal life in Jesus’ name.
