John 13 – The Servant King and the New Commandment
“A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you…” (John 13:34, NKJV)
🔍 CAPTURE THE SCENE (What do I see?)
It’s Passover night. Jesus knows His hour has come. He shares a final meal with His disciples—including Judas—and shocks them by doing the work of the lowest servant: washing their feet.
- Jesus knows His time has come and that He will return to the Father.
- During supper, He gets up, wraps a towel around His waist, and washes His disciples’ feet.
- Peter resists: “You shall never wash my feet!” Jesus replies, “If I do not wash you, you have no part with Me.”
- Jesus explains that not all are clean—referring to Judas’ betrayal.
- He tells them: “You also ought to wash one another’s feet.”
- Jesus identifies His betrayer—Judas—and sends him out.
- After Judas leaves, Jesus says, “Now the Son of Man is glorified…”
- He gives the new commandment: love one another as I have loved you.
- Peter vows to follow Him even unto death, but Jesus predicts:“Before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.”
📖 ANALYZE THE MESSAGE (What does it mean?)
- True Greatness Is Servanthood (vv. 1–17)
Jesus—fully aware of His authority—chose to stoop low and wash feet. He didn’t just teach servanthood, He lived it. - Intimacy Doesn’t Mean Immunity (vv. 18–30)
Judas shared the table but rejected the heart. Betrayal can come from those closest, yet Jesus stayed steady. - Love Is Our New Identity (vv. 31–35)
Jesus raises the standard:“As I have loved you”—not as we love ourselves, but self-sacrificially. - Pride Precedes Denial (vv. 36–38)
Peter meant well, but his bold vow was built on fleshly confidence, not spiritual strength. We all fall short without grace.

- Peter’s Denial:

- John 21:15–19 – Peter is later restored by Jesus
🙌 EXECUTE (So what? How does this affect my life?)
Principle: True love expresses itself through humble service, unwavering loyalty, and grace for even the undeserving.
- Serve From Strength, Not Insecurity
Jesus washed feet knowing who He was (v. 3). Don’t serve to earn worth—serve because you already have it in Christ. - Beware of Heart Proximity Without Heart Change
Judas was close—but never surrendered. Be sure you’re not just around Jesus—make sure you belong to Him. - Let Love Be Your Defining Mark
Not your church attendance. Not your doctrine. Love is the badge of true discipleship. - Don’t Overpromise in the Flesh
Like Peter, we often speak boldly but fall under pressure. Depend on the Spirit, not your willpower. - Forgive and Serve Anyway
Jesus washed Judas’ feet. Think about that. You can love even those who hurt you, by the power of the cross.
