Notes – John 12

John 12 – Worship, Glory, and the Hour Has Come

“Most assuredly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains alone…” (John 12:24, NKJV)

🔍 CAPTURE THE SCENE (What do I see?)

Jesus arrives in Bethany, just six days before Passover. Lazarus is alive and well. Mary responds in extravagant love. Judas scoffs. Jesus enters Jerusalem to shouts of praise, but with a heavy heart, knowing His hour has come.

  • Mary anoints Jesus’ feet with costly oil and wipes them with her hair.
  • Judas Iscariot criticizes her, pretending to care about the poor.
  • Jesus defends her: “She has kept this for the day of My burial.”
  • The crowds grow because of Lazarus; the chief priests even plot to kill Lazarus.
  • Jesus enters Jerusalem on a donkey, fulfilling Zechariah 9:9.
  • The crowd shouts: “Hosanna! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!”
  • Greeks approach Philip: “We want to see Jesus.”
  • Jesus responds by speaking of His coming death:“Unless a grain of wheat dies, it cannot bear fruit.”
  • voice from heaven speaks: “I have glorified it and will glorify it again.”
  • Jesus predicts His crucifixion:“If I am lifted up, I will draw all peoples to Myself.”
  • The people are confused; they thought the Christ would remain forever.
  • Jesus warns: “Walk while you have the light…”
  • Many leaders believe in Him secretly but love praise from men more than from God.
  • Jesus cries out, declaring that He came to save the world, not condemn it.

📖 ANALYZE THE MESSAGE (What does it mean?)

  1. True Worship Costs Something (vv. 1–8)
Mary’s act was extravagant and unapologetic. Real worship always costs—time, pride, resources—but it’s beautiful to Jesus.
  2. Religious Jealousy Hates Transformation (vv. 9–11)
Lazarus became a walking testimony, so the chief priests wanted to kill him. People may hate you for the proof of your resurrection.
  3. Jesus Fulfills Prophecy (vv. 12–16)
The Triumphal Entry wasn’t staged—it was foretold. Jesus enters humbly on a donkey, declaring Himself Messiah-King.
  4. Death Brings Life (vv. 23–26)
Jesus teaches that His death will produce fruit—many sons and daughters.“He who loves his life will lose it…”
  5. The World Hears, but Few Truly Believe (vv. 37–43)
Though signs are abundant, belief is rare and risky. Many leaders believe secretly, paralyzed by fear of man.
  6. Jesus Came to Save, Not to Condemn (vv. 44–50)
His final public cry: Believe in Me, walk in the light, and you will not remain in darkness.

🙌 EXECUTE (So what? How does this affect my life?)

Principle: Following Jesus means sacrificial worship, public witness, and fearless surrender—even when it leads to a cross.

  1. Worship Boldly, Not Secretly
Mary’s perfume filled the room. Don’t hide your devotion—let the fragrance of your faith be noticed.
  2. Be Willing to Die to Self
Fruit comes through falling and dying. What part of your life must go to the grave so Christ can live through you?
  3. Walk in the Light Today
Don’t delay surrender. Jesus said, “Walk while you have the light.” The window of opportunity doesn’t last forever.
  4. Speak Boldly, Not Secretly
Don’t be like the rulers who believed but stayed silent. If your faith is real, let it show—even when it costs.
  5. Lift Him Up, Not Yourself
Jesus draws people when He is lifted up. Point others to His cross, not your credentials.
