Galatians 5 – Stand Fast in Liberty
“Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free…” (Galatians 5:1, NKJV)
“Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.” (v. 16)
🔍 CAPTURE THE SCENE (What do I see?)
- A passionate call to stay free from the bondage of legalism
- A clear choice: law or grace, flesh or Spirit
- Paul warns against using freedom as an excuse for sin
- He outlines the works of the flesh vs. the fruit of the Spirit
- We are called to crucify the flesh and walk by the Spirit daily
📖 ANALYZE THE MESSAGE (What does it mean?)
1. Freedom vs. Bondage (vv. 1–6)
“Do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage.”
Going back to the law (like circumcision) cancels grace
“In Christ Jesus… faith working through love” is what matters
True righteousness flows from faith, not rule-keeping
2. False Teachers Will Be Judged (vv. 7–12)
“A little leaven leavens the whole lump.”
Legalism spreads quickly and poisons the gospel
Paul is so fired up he says:
“I could wish that those who trouble you would even cut themselves off!”
3. Freedom Is Not a License to Sin (vv. 13–15)
“Do not use liberty as an opportunity for the flesh…”
Freedom in Christ must be used to serve one another in love
“All the law is fulfilled in… ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’”
Biting and devouring one another leads to destruction
4. Walk in the Spirit, Not the Flesh (vv. 16–18)
“Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.”
The flesh and Spirit are at war
Being led by the Spirit means we’re no longer under the law
5. The Works of the Flesh (vv. 19–21)
“Now the works of the flesh are evident…”
- Adultery, fornication, uncleanness
- Hatred, jealousy, outbursts of wrath
- Drunkenness, envy, and more
“Those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.”
6. The Fruit of the Spirit (vv. 22–26)
“But the fruit of the Spirit is…”
- Love, joy, peace
- Patience, kindness, goodness
- Faithfulness, gentleness, self-control
“Against such there is no law.”
Those who belong to Christ have crucified the flesh
So — walk in the Spirit, not in pride or comparison
