Acts 1 – The Ascension and the Promise of Power
“But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you…” (Acts 1:8)
🔍 CAPTURE THE SCENE (What do I see?)
Acts 1 sets the stage for the explosive birth of the Church in Acts 2. Luke, the author, begins by reviewing the resurrection appearances of Jesus and recording His final words before His ascension into heaven.
- Luke addresses Theophilus, continuing his Gospel narrative.
- Jesus presents Himself alive for 40 days, speaking of the kingdom of God.
- He tells the disciples to stay in Jerusalem and wait for the Promise of the Father—the Holy Spirit.
- The disciples ask Jesus if He will now restore the kingdom to Israel.
- Jesus tells them the Father sets the timing, but they will soon receive power to be His witnesses.
- Jesus ascends into heaven as they watch, and two angels appear saying He will return in the same way.
- The disciples return to Jerusalem and wait in the upper room—in prayer and unity.
- Peter leads in choosing a replacement for Judas: Matthias is chosen by casting lots.
📖 ANALYZE THE MESSAGE (What does it mean?)
- The Continuation of Jesus’ Ministry (vv. 1–3)
Acts isn’t the end—it’s the continuation. Jesus began to do and teach in the Gospels, and now He continues through the Spirit-empowered Church. - The Promise of the Holy Spirit (vv. 4–5)
Jesus commands them to wait for the Holy Spirit—not optional, but essential. This isn’t just a force—it’s the indwelling presence of God enabling the mission. - The Kingdom Question (v. 6)
The disciples still expect a literal kingdom for Israel. Jesus doesn’t correct the hope—but redirects the timing and focus: they are to witness, not worry. - The Ascension (vv. 9–11)
Jesus is taken up into heaven physically and visibly. The angels declare that He will return in the same manner—a clear reference to His literal Second Coming. - Prayer and Preparation (vv. 12–14)
Before Pentecost comes, the disciples wait, pray, and unify. This is the model for receiving the power of God: obedience + expectancy. - The Replacement of Judas (vv. 15–26)
Scripture is fulfilled. Peter leads, showing the early Church’s dependence on Scripture and prayer. Matthias is chosen—restoring the Twelve before the Spirit’s arrival.

🙌 EXECUTE (So what? How does this affect my life?)
Principle: Before you go out in power, you must wait in surrender. The Spirit empowers what obedience prepares.
- Live Expectantly
Jesus is coming back. He ascended, and He will return just as He said. Let that hope shape how you live today. - Wait on God’s Power, Don’t Work in Your Own
The disciples didn’t rush ahead—they waited, prayed, and obeyed. Ask daily for the filling of the Holy Spirit to guide your work, witness, and worship. - Witness Where You Are
Jesus didn’t call them to figure out the timeline—He called them to testify. Start in your Jerusalem—your family, friends, neighborhood—and go outward from there.
