“But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come…” (2 Timothy 3:1, NKJV)
“All Scripture is given by inspiration of God… and is profitable…” (v. 16)
🔍 CAPTURE THE SCENE (What do I see?)
- Paul gives a sobering prophecy about the spiritual and moral decline in the last days
- He warns Timothy about false teachers and ungodly people
- Paul reminds Timothy of his own example of endurance
- The chapter ends with a powerful statement about the authority and sufficiency of Scripture
📖 ANALYZE THE MESSAGE (What does it mean?)
1. Perilous Times Will Come (vv. 1–5)
“Men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud…”
Paul lists 19 traits of the spirit of the age — all rooted in selfishness
“…unthankful, unholy, unloving… slanderers… despisers of good…”
A breakdown of family, truth, and moral restraint
“Having a form of godliness but denying its power…”
Religious appearance without transformation
“From such people turn away!”
We must separate from false religion and corrupt influences
2. Deceivers and the Weak (vv. 6–9)
“They creep into households and make captives of gullible women…”
False teachers exploit the vulnerable
“Always learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.”
Information without transformation leads to spiritual blindness
“Their folly will be manifest to all…”
God will eventually expose all deception
3. Follow My Example (vv. 10–13)
“But you have carefully followed my doctrine, manner of life…”
Paul reminds Timothy of his consistency and integrity
“Persecutions… which I endured. And out of them all the Lord delivered me.”
Faithfulness doesn’t avoid suffering, but God brings deliverance
“Yes, and all who desire to live godly… will suffer persecution.”
Persecution is a normal result of a godly life
“But evil men… will grow worse and worse, deceiving and being deceived.”
Spiritual darkness will increase, not decrease
4. Continue in the Scriptures (vv. 14–17)
“But you must continue in the things which you have learned…”
Stay anchored in biblical truth, not cultural opinion
“From childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures…”
Timothy was rooted early in God’s Word
“All Scripture is given by inspiration of God…”
The Bible is breathed out by God — divine, not man-made
“…and is profitable for doctrine, reproof, correction, and instruction…”
God’s Word is sufficient to teach, convict, correct, and train
“That the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped…”
Scripture gives us everything we need for a faithful life
