2 Corinthians 2 – Forgiveness, Restoration, and the Fragrance of Christ

“Sufficient to such a man is this punishment… you ought rather to forgive and comfort him.” (2 Corinthians 2:6–7, NKJV)
“We are to God the fragrance of Christ…” (v. 15)
“Who is sufficient for these things?” (v. 16)
🔍 CAPTURE THE SCENE (What do I see?)
- Paul explains why he delayed visiting Corinth — he didn’t want to come with sorrow
- He addresses someone who had been disciplined by the church (likely from 1 Corinthians 5)
- Paul urges the church to forgive, comfort, and reaffirm love
- He warns of Satan’s schemes when forgiveness is withheld
- Paul describes believers as spreading the fragrance of Christ to the world — both to those being saved and those perishing
📖 ANALYZE THE MESSAGE (What does it mean?)
1. Paul’s Grief and Love (vv. 1–4)
“I determined this within myself, that I would not come again to you in sorrow.”
Paul delayed his visit not to avoid them, but to spare them further pain
“Out of much affliction and anguish of heart I wrote to you…”
His correction came from love, not anger
2. Forgive and Restore the Offender (vv. 5–11)
“Sufficient to such a man is this punishment…”
Church discipline had its effect — it was time to restore
“You ought rather to forgive and comfort him…”
Without forgiveness, sorrow can turn to despair
“Lest Satan should take advantage of us…”
Bitterness and division are tools of the enemy
“We are not ignorant of his devices.”
Paul reminds them to be spiritually alert and grace-filled
3. Paul’s Heart and Mission (vv. 12–13)
“I had no rest in my spirit… not finding Titus…”
Paul is honest about his distress and concern
Even while ministering, he carried emotional burdens
4. The Fragrance of Christ (vv. 14–17)
“Thanks be to God who always leads us in triumph…”
Paul sees himself as a conqueror in Christ’s parade
“Through us diffuses the fragrance of His knowledge…”
Our lives spread the aroma of Jesus — people notice
“To the one we are the aroma of death… to the other the aroma of life.”
To those rejecting Christ, our message is offensive
To those being saved, it is life-giving and beautiful
“We are not, as so many, peddling the word of God…”
Paul teaches with sincerity and divine authority, not for profit
