Notes – 1 John 4

1 John 4 – God Is Love and Perfect Love Casts Out Fear

“Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God… He who does not love does not know God, for God is love.” (1 John 4:7–8, NKJV)
“There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment.” (v. 18)

🔍 CAPTURE THE SCENE (What do I see?)

  • John urges believers to test the spirits because not all teachings are from God
  • The chapter highlights the divine source of love, and how love is both proof of salvation and evidence of God’s presence
  • God’s love is most clearly seen in the sacrifice of Jesus
  • Love is not just a feeling — it’s the evidence of the indwelling Holy Spirit
  • We are told that perfect love frees us from fear of judgment, and we must extend that love to others

📖 ANALYZE THE MESSAGE (What does it mean?)

1. Test the Spirits (vv. 1–6)

“Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God…”
Spiritual discernment is crucial — not every message or teacher is trustworthy
“Every spirit that confesses Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is of God…”
True doctrine affirms the full deity and humanity of Christ
“You are of God, little children, and have overcome them…”
Believers overcome false teachings because God’s Spirit is greater than the spirit of error
“He who knows God hears us… By this we know the spirit of truth and the spirit of error.”
There is a clear distinction between truth and lies — Scripture is the standard

2. Love Reveals God’s Presence (vv. 7–11)

“Love is of God… Everyone who loves is born of God and knows God.”
Genuine, selfless love is a sign of salvation
“He who does not love does not know God, for God is love.”
To live in hatred or indifference is to deny God’s nature
“In this the love of God was manifested… that God has sent His only begotten Son…”
The cross is the ultimate demonstration of love
“Not that we loved God, but that He loved us…”
God took the initiative — His love is unearned and sacrificial
“If God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.”
We love because we’ve been loved first

3. God Abides in Us (vv. 12–16)

“No one has seen God at any time. If we love one another, God abides in us…”
Love is the invisible proof of the invisible God
“By this we know that we abide in Him… because He has given us of His Spirit.”
The Holy Spirit gives us confidence that we belong to God
“Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him…”
Faith in Christ, empowered by the Spirit, brings union with God
“We have known and believed the love that God has for us.”
Knowing God is not just intellectual — it’s relational and experiential

4. Perfect Love Casts Out Fear (vv. 17–19)

“Love has been perfected among us… that we may have boldness in the day of judgment.”
When God’s love matures in us, we stop fearing punishment
“There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear…”
Fear of God’s wrath fades when we know we are loved and forgiven
“We love Him because He first loved us.”
All our love for God is a response to His initiating love

5. Love for Others Confirms Love for God (vv. 20–21)

“If someone says, ‘I love God,’ and hates his brother, he is a liar…”
You can’t claim to love an invisible God and hate a visible brother
“He who loves God must love his brother also.”
Love for others is not optional — it’s the evidence of loving God

🙌 EXECUTE (So what? How does this affect my life?)

Principle: The love of God isn’t just something we receive — it’s something we express, and it transforms how we see God, ourselves, and others.

  1. Stay Rooted in Truth
Test every teaching — even popular ones — by Scripture. The Holy Spirit leads you into truth, not confusion
  2. Love Others Like God Loves You
Make time for sacrificial, unconditional love today. Forgive, serve, give
  3. Let Go of Fear
If you are in Christ, you can face judgment with boldness, not dread. Let His love calm your anxious heart
  4. Make Love Visible
Loving God isn’t just vertical — it must go horizontal to others
