1 John 5 – Faith, Overcoming the World, and Eternal Life

“Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves Him who begot also loves him who is begotten of Him.” (1 John 5:1, NKJV)
“And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith.” (v. 4)

🔍 CAPTURE THE SCENE (What do I see?)

  • John brings his letter to a close with strong affirmations of faith, love, and assurance
  • He explains how belief in Jesusobedience to God, and love for others all flow from being born of God
  • He reminds believers that faith is victorious over the world
  • The chapter confirms the certainty of eternal life and encourages confidence in prayer
  • It also highlights the testimony of the Spirit, the water, and the blood, declaring Jesus as the Son of God

📖 ANALYZE THE MESSAGE (What does it mean?)

1. Born of God and Overcoming the World (vv. 1–5)

“Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God…”
Salvation comes through faith in Jesus as the promised Messiah
“Everyone who loves Him… also loves him who is begotten of Him.”
Love for God naturally extends to love for His children
“For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments.”
True love is seen in obedience, not just emotion
“His commandments are not burdensome.”
The Spirit empowers us to follow God with joy, not drudgery
“Whatever is born of God overcomes the world…”
Faith in Jesus gives us victory over temptation, deception, and despair
“Who is he who overcomes… but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?”
Faith in Christ is the key to enduring spiritual victory

2. The Witness of the Spirit, the Water, and the Blood (vv. 6–10)

“This is He who came by water and blood—Jesus Christ; not only by water, but by water and blood.”

  • Water likely refers to Jesus’ baptism (affirming His divine Sonship)
  • Blood refers to His atoning death
  • Both confirm His true identity

“It is the Spirit who bears witness, because the Spirit is truth.”
The Holy Spirit affirms who Jesus is, to every believer
“There are three that bear witness… the Spirit, the water, and the blood…”
These witnesses agree and affirm the truth of the Gospel
“If we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater…”
God Himself has given testimony about His Son
“He who believes… has the witness in himself… he who does not believe… has made Him a liar…”
To reject Jesus is to reject God’s testimony

3. Eternal Life Is in the Son (vv. 11–13)

“And this is the testimony: that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son.”
Eternal life is not something we earn — it’s a gift, found only in Christ
“He who has the Son has life; he who does not… does not have life.”
There is no neutral ground â€” you either have Jesus or you don’t
“These things I have written… that you may know that you have eternal life…”
John’s goal is assurance — that believers can have confidence in their salvation
“And that you may continue to believe…”
Eternal life fuels ongoing faith and trust

4. Confidence in Prayer and God’s Will (vv. 14–17)

“Now this is the confidence… that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us.”
Effective prayer is aligned with God’s will, not just our desires
“We know that we have the petitions… we have asked of Him.”
When we pray God’s will, we can expect answers
“If anyone sees his brother sinning… he will ask, and He will give him life…”
Prayer includes interceding for others, especially those caught in sin
“There is sin leading to death…”
This likely refers to persistent, unrepentant rebellion — not just any failure
“All unrighteousness is sin, and there is sin not leading to death.”
All sin is serious, but not all leads to spiritual death when there’s repentance

5. Three Assurances for Believers (vv. 18–21)

“We know that whoever is born of God does not sin…”
A believer doesn’t live in habitual, unrepentant sin
“He who has been born of God keeps himself, and the wicked one does not touch him.”
There’s spiritual protection for those abiding in Christ
“We know that we are of God, and the whole world lies under the sway of the wicked one.”
There are two camps: God’s kingdom vs. the world under Satan’s control
“We know that the Son of God has come and has given us an understanding…”
Jesus brings spiritual clarity â€” we no longer walk in darkness
“Little children, keep yourselves from idols.”
Final warning: don’t replace God with false loves or dependencies
