1 John 5 â Faith, Overcoming the World, and Eternal Life

âWhoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves Him who begot also loves him who is begotten of Him.â (1 John 5:1, NKJV)
âAnd this is the victory that has overcome the worldâour faith.â (v. 4)
đ CAPTURE THE SCENE (What do I see?)
- John brings his letter to a close with strong affirmations of faith, love, and assurance
- He explains how belief in Jesus, obedience to God, and love for others all flow from being born of God
- He reminds believers that faith is victorious over the world
- The chapter confirms the certainty of eternal life and encourages confidence in prayer
- It also highlights the testimony of the Spirit, the water, and the blood, declaring Jesus as the Son of God
đ ANALYZE THE MESSAGE (What does it mean?)
1. Born of God and Overcoming the World (vv. 1â5)
âWhoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of GodâŚâ
Salvation comes through faith in Jesus as the promised Messiah
âEveryone who loves Him⌠also loves him who is begotten of Him.â
Love for God naturally extends to love for His children
âFor this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments.â
True love is seen in obedience, not just emotion
âHis commandments are not burdensome.â
The Spirit empowers us to follow God with joy, not drudgery
âWhatever is born of God overcomes the worldâŚâ
Faith in Jesus gives us victory over temptation, deception, and despair
âWho is he who overcomes⌠but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?â
Faith in Christ is the key to enduring spiritual victory
2. The Witness of the Spirit, the Water, and the Blood (vv. 6â10)
âThis is He who came by water and bloodâJesus Christ; not only by water, but by water and blood.â
- Water likely refers to Jesusâ baptism (affirming His divine Sonship)
- Blood refers to His atoning death
- Both confirm His true identity
âIt is the Spirit who bears witness, because the Spirit is truth.â
The Holy Spirit affirms who Jesus is, to every believer
âThere are three that bear witness⌠the Spirit, the water, and the bloodâŚâ
These witnesses agree and affirm the truth of the Gospel
âIf we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greaterâŚâ
God Himself has given testimony about His Son
âHe who believes⌠has the witness in himself⌠he who does not believe⌠has made Him a liarâŚâ
To reject Jesus is to reject Godâs testimony
3. Eternal Life Is in the Son (vv. 11â13)
âAnd this is the testimony: that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son.â
Eternal life is not something we earn â itâs a gift, found only in Christ
âHe who has the Son has life; he who does not⌠does not have life.â
There is no neutral ground â you either have Jesus or you donât
âThese things I have written⌠that you may know that you have eternal lifeâŚâ
Johnâs goal is assurance â that believers can have confidence in their salvation
âAnd that you may continue to believeâŚâ
Eternal life fuels ongoing faith and trust
4. Confidence in Prayer and Godâs Will (vv. 14â17)
âNow this is the confidence⌠that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us.â
Effective prayer is aligned with Godâs will, not just our desires
âWe know that we have the petitions⌠we have asked of Him.â
When we pray Godâs will, we can expect answers
âIf anyone sees his brother sinning⌠he will ask, and He will give him lifeâŚâ
Prayer includes interceding for others, especially those caught in sin
âThere is sin leading to deathâŚâ
This likely refers to persistent, unrepentant rebellion â not just any failure
âAll unrighteousness is sin, and there is sin not leading to death.â
All sin is serious, but not all leads to spiritual death when thereâs repentance
5. Three Assurances for Believers (vv. 18â21)
âWe know that whoever is born of God does not sinâŚâ
A believer doesnât live in habitual, unrepentant sin
âHe who has been born of God keeps himself, and the wicked one does not touch him.â
Thereâs spiritual protection for those abiding in Christ
âWe know that we are of God, and the whole world lies under the sway of the wicked one.â
There are two camps: Godâs kingdom vs. the world under Satanâs control
âWe know that the Son of God has come and has given us an understandingâŚâ
Jesus brings spiritual clarity â we no longer walk in darkness
âLittle children, keep yourselves from idols.â
Final warning: donât replace God with false loves or dependencies
