1 John 3 – Children of God and the Call to Righteousness

“Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God!” (1 John 3:1, NKJV)
“Little children, let no one deceive you. He who practices righteousness is righteous, just as He is righteous.” (v. 7)
🔍 CAPTURE THE SCENE (What do I see?)
- John continues his pastoral encouragement, focusing now on our identity as God’s children
- He contrasts the lifestyle of the believer (righteousness, love, obedience) with that of the world (lawlessness, hatred)
- We are reminded of the purifying hope of Jesus’ return, the seriousness of sin, and the evidence of salvation
- The chapter emphasizes the power of love, calling us to love not just in words but in action and truth
📖 ANALYZE THE MESSAGE (What does it mean?)
1. We Are God’s Children (vv. 1–3)
“Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God!”
Our identity as God’s children is rooted in His love, not in our worthiness
“Therefore the world does not know us, because it did not know Him.”
Believers are often misunderstood, just as Jesus was
“We know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him…”
We live with a glorious hope — Jesus is coming back, and we’ll be transformed
“Everyone who has this hope… purifies himself.”
Hope in Christ’s return leads to a life of holiness and spiritual discipline
2. Sin and the Children of God (vv. 4–10)
“Whoever commits sin also commits lawlessness, and sin is lawlessness.”
Sin is not just a mistake; it’s rebellion against God’s law
“And you know that He was manifested to take away our sins…”
Jesus came not just to forgive sin, but to remove its power
“Whoever abides in Him does not sin…”
This refers to habitual, unrepentant sin — the lifestyle of someone not truly saved
“Little children, let no one deceive you. He who practices righteousness is righteous…”
Don’t be fooled — true children of God live righteously
“He who sins is of the devil… For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil.”
Jesus came to break sin’s grip and defeat Satan’s power
“Whoever has been born of God does not sin… because he has been born of God.”
God’s Spirit in us leads to a transformed life
“In this the children of God and the children of the devil are manifest…”
You can tell the difference: one walks in righteousness and love; the other in rebellion and hate
3. Love One Another (vv. 11–18)
“This is the message… that we should love one another.”
This is the core command — rooted in Christ’s own love
“Not as Cain who was of the wicked one and murdered his brother…”
Hatred and jealousy are signs of spiritual death
“We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love the brethren.”
Loving others is a mark of true salvation
“Whoever hates his brother is a murderer…”
Jesus equated hatred with murder (Matthew 5:22)
“By this we know love, because He laid down His life for us.”
Christ set the standard — real love sacrifices
“Let us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth.”
Love is not just talk — it’s visible, practical, and real
4. Confidence Before God (vv. 19–24)
“And by this we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before Him.”
Living in love gives us confidence in our relationship with God
“If our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart…”
When we feel guilt or shame, remember: God’s mercy is greater
“Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, we have confidence toward God.”
A clear conscience leads to boldness in prayer
“And whatever we ask we receive from Him, because we keep His commandments…”
Obedience and love open the way for fruitful prayer
“And this is His commandment: that we should believe… and love one another.”
Two pillars of Christian life: faith in Jesus and love for others
“Now he who keeps His commandments abides in Him… And by this we know that He abides in us, by the Spirit whom He has given us.”
The Holy Spirit confirms we belong to Christ and empowers us to live out His truth
