I remember my strike training in 2009, where humility, faith, dependence, and trust came to life. Terrified of heights, I faced a 16-foot ladder, my heart pounding. My instructor’s calm assurance was my anchor. Climbing that ladder was daunting, and I had to trust my instructor’s expertise and the ladder’s stability with my life. Step by step, rung by rung, I ascended, fear threatening to overwhelm me, but humility reminded me of my limitations, and I placed my faith in my instructor’s guidance. Dependence on his experience kept me moving. Reaching the top and safely descending was a powerful lesson in trust, proving that even in fear, strength comes from surrendering control.
Humility, faith, dependence, and trust are interwoven principles that form the foundation of a vibrant relationship with God. Each of these qualities supports and enriches the others, creating a posture of heart that is open to God’s presence, guidance, and transforming power. Together, they facilitate our pursuit of God, drawing us closer to Him and deepening our understanding of His character and will.
1. Recognize God’s Sovereignty
Acknowledge God as the creator and sustainer of all things. Proverbs 15:33 reminds us that wisdom begins with the fear of the Lord, leading to humility.
“The fear of the LORD is instruction in wisdom, and humility comes before honor.” (Proverbs 15:33, ESV)
2. Value Others Above Yourself
Philippians 2:3-4 teaches us to consider others more significant than ourselves, looking out for their interests as well as our own.
“Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.” (Philippians 2:3-4, ESV)
3. Practice Gratitude
Regularly thank God for His blessings. 1 Thessalonians 5:18 encourages us to give thanks in all circumstances, reminding us of our dependence on Him.
“Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” (1 Thessalonians 5:18, ESV)
4. Serve Others
Jesus exemplified humility through service. Mark 10:45 shows us that He came to serve and give His life as a ransom for many.
“For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” (Mark 10:45, ESV)
5. Seek Forgiveness and Forgive
Acknowledge your sins and seek forgiveness from God and others. Colossians 3:13 urges us to forgive as the Lord forgave us.
“Bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive.” (Colossians 3:13, ESV)
6. Embrace God’s Discipline
Accept God’s correction for your growth. Proverbs 3:11-12 highlights that God disciplines those He loves, like a father with his child.
“My son, do not despise the LORD’s discipline or be weary of his reproof, for the LORD reproves him whom he loves, as a father the son in whom he delights.” (Proverbs 3:11-12, ESV)
7. Meditate on Scripture
Regularly read and reflect on God’s Word. Psalm 119:105 says, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”
“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” (Psalm 119:105, ESV)
8. Pray for a Humble Heart
Ask God to cultivate humility in you. James 4:10 promises that if we humble ourselves before the Lord, He will lift us up.
“Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you.” (James 4:10, ESV)
Humility is the starting point. Recognizing our limitations and sinfulness compared to God’s infinite wisdom, power, and holiness opens our hearts to Him.
“God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” (James 4:6, ESV)
Faith is our response to God’s revelation. Hebrews 11:1 defines faith as “the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” Trusting in God’s character, promises, and Word—even when circumstances are challenging—requires humility, acknowledging our need for God and His salvation. Through faith, we believe in God’s kingdom and His redemptive work in Jesus Christ, empowering us to live according to His purposes.
“Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.” (Hebrews 11:1, ESV)
Dependence on God flows naturally from humility and faith. Recognizing our insufficiency, we rely on God for strength, wisdom, provision, and direction.
“Apart from me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5, ESV)
This ongoing surrender deepens our relationship with God as we experience His faithfulness in meeting our needs and guiding our steps.
Trust is the enduring confidence in God’s goodness, faithfulness, and sovereignty, even amidst life’s uncertainties and trials. Trust grows as we experience God’s faithfulness and learn more about His character through Scripture, prayer, and the community of believers. Trusting God means believing that He works all things together for our good, even when the outcome is unclear.
“And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.” (Romans 8:28, ESV)
Together, these principles create a dynamic pursuit of God. Humility opens our hearts to God’s transforming grace; faith enables us to believe in and respond to God’s promises; dependence keeps us tethered to God as our source of life and strength; and trust gives us the confidence to follow God’s leading, even when the path is uncertain.
The Bible calls us to actively seek God and draw near to Him with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith.
“Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.” (Hebrews 10:22, ESV)
By doing so, humility, faith, dependence, and trust work together to deepen our relationship with God, transform our character, and empower us to reflect His love and glory to the world.
