True Identity: Who Are You Really?

Discovering Your True Identity in Christ

My brother, Dan, recently sent me a video that reminded me how easy it is to forget our true identity. Many of us suffer from spiritual amnesia, losing sight of who we truly are in Christ. From a human perspective, my identity is tied to my last name, and being a Jr. means I was named after my earthly father, Paul Smith. However, for many years, I struggled with addiction and began to see myself as unworthy, guilty, and wicked. This warped identity kept me trapped in the pit of addiction. It wasn’t until I understood my true identity in Christ that I began to find freedom and strength to overcome my struggles.

Understanding Your Identity in Christ

Knowing your true identity as a believer in Christ is foundational to your faith and impacts how you live out your Christianity. Scripture offers profound insights into how God sees you and what it means to be in Christ. Here are several key biblical truths about your identity as a believer:

  1. You are a Child of God
John 1:12-13 tells us, “But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.” As a believer, you are adopted into God’s family, cherished and loved as His child.
  2. You are a New Creation
2 Corinthians 5:17 says, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.” In Christ, your past does not define you. You are given a fresh start, living in the reality of your new identity in Him.
  3. You are Justified and Have Peace with God
Romans 5:1 states, “Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.” Justification means that through faith in Christ, you are declared righteous before God, and your relationship with Him is restored.
  4. You are Part of the Body of Christ
1 Corinthians 12:27 affirms, “Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it.” As a believer, you are not only united with Christ but also connected with other believers, sharing in the life and mission of the Church.
  5. You are Chosen and Appointed to Bear Fruit
Jesus says in John 15:16, “You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide…” This underscores your purpose and calling to live a life that reflects God’s love and to make a difference in the world.
  6. You are Sealed with the Holy Spirit
Ephesians 1:13-14 explains, “In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it…” The Holy Spirit within you is a mark of your belonging to God and a promise of your eternal inheritance.
  7. You are Loved with an Everlasting Love
Romans 8:38-39 powerfully assures that nothing can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. This love is unconditional, steadfast, and eternal.

Embracing Your True Identity

These truths about your identity in Christ are transformative. They are not based on feelings or circumstances but on the unchanging word of God. Embracing these truths helps you to live with confidence, purpose, and joy, knowing who you are in God’s eyes. As you walk in your true identity, remember that you are worthy, redeemed, and forgiven. This understanding will empower you to break free from the lies that hold you back and to live fully in the freedom and strength that God provides.

Living out your identity as a child of God involves both embracing your inherent value in Him and reflecting His love and character in your daily life. Here are some practical ways to embody this identity:

  1. Remain in God’s Word: Regularly reading and meditating on Scripture helps you to understand your identity according to God’s perspective, not the world’s. Let the truth of God’s Word shape your thoughts, beliefs, and actions.
  2. Cultivate a Life of Prayer: Prayer is your direct line of communication with the Father. Through prayer, you can express your dependence, gratitude, and desires to Him, strengthening your relationship and aligning your heart with His.
  3. Live in Obedience: Jesus said, “If you love me, you will keep my commandments” (John 14:15). Living out your identity involves obedience to God’s Word and His leading in your life. This obedience is not about striving for acceptance; it’s a response to the love and identity you already have in Him.
  4. Serve Others: Following the example of Jesus, who “came not to be served but to serve” (Mark 10:45), look for opportunities to serve others in love, both within your community and beyond. Service is a powerful way to demonstrate your identity as God’s child.
  5. Engage in Community: Being part of a Christian community allows you to grow, serve, and encourage others while being encouraged yourself. Through authentic relationships, you can live out your identity collectively as the body of Christ.
  6. Forgive as You Have Been Forgiven: Ephesians 4:32 encourages us to be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you. Embracing and offering forgiveness is a hallmark of a child of God.
  7. Bear Fruit of the Spirit: Galatians 5:22-23 lists the fruit of the Spirit, which includes love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Cultivating these in your life reflects your identity and the work of the Spirit within you.
  8. Embrace Your Role as an Ambassador: As a child of God, you are called to be an ambassador for Christ, sharing the message of reconciliation (2 Corinthians 5:20). This involves living a life that reflects God’s love and sharing the hope of the gospel with others.
  9. Rest in Your Identity: Remember that your worth and identity are not based on your achievements, failures, or the opinions of others. They are rooted in God’s unconditional love for you. Regularly remind yourself of this truth, especially in times of doubt or discouragement.
  10. Cultivate Gratitude: Recognize and give thanks for the many ways God is at work in your life. Gratitude shifts your focus from what you lack to the abundance you have in Christ.

Living out your identity as a child of God is a journey of growth and discovery. It’s about becoming more like Jesus in your character and actions, driven by the love and acceptance you’ve received from your Heavenly Father.
