Galatians 2 – Justified by Faith
“Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law but by faith in Jesus Christ…” (Galatians 2:16, NKJV)
“I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me…” (v. 20)
🔍 CAPTURE THE SCENE (What do I see?)
- Paul recounts his visit to Jerusalem and confrontation with false teachers
- He defends the true gospel — salvation by faith alone
- He confronts Peter (Cephas) publicly for hypocrisy
- The chapter climaxes with Paul’s personal declaration of faith and identity in Christ
- Works of the law are exposed as powerless to save
📖 ANALYZE THE MESSAGE (What does it mean?)
1. Paul’s Authority Confirmed (vv. 1–10)
“I went up… by revelation… and communicated the gospel I preach…”
Paul meets with leaders in Jerusalem to confirm his ministry
- Titus, a Greek, was not forced to be circumcised
- The leaders recognized Paul’s calling to the Gentiles
“They added nothing to me.”
2. Confronting Peter (vv. 11–14)
“I withstood him to his face, because he was to be blamed.”
Peter was eating with Gentiles, but pulled back out of fear
Paul rebuked him publicly for hypocrisy
“You live like a Gentile but compel Gentiles to live as Jews?”
3. Justified by Faith, Not the Law (vv. 15–21)
“By the works of the law no flesh shall be justified.”
Paul lays out the gospel clearly:
- Righteousness is not earned, it’s received by faith
- Trying to rebuild the law only proves you’re a transgressor
“I have been crucified with Christ…”
- Paul’s identity is now fully in Christ living in him
- Righteousness doesn’t come through the law — or Christ died for nothing
🔁 COMPARE THIS CHAPTER WITH THE REST OF SCRIPTURE
- Justification by Faith:
- Romans 3:28 – A man is justified by faith apart from the law
- Philippians 3:9 – Righteousness from God by faith
- Crucified with Christ:
- Romans 6:6 – Our old self was crucified with Him
- Colossians 3:3 – Your life is hidden with Christ in God
- Unity in the Body:
- Acts 10:34–35 – God shows no partiality
- James 2:1 – Don’t hold the faith with partiality

Principle: You are justified by faith alone — and your new identity is “Christ in you.”
- Live Free from Legalism
Don’t add rules to what Jesus has already finished - Stand Firm in the Gospel
Like Paul, speak truth in love — even if it means calling out error - Know Your Identity
You’ve died with Christ — your life now belongs to Him - Reject Performance-Based Righteousness
Don’t earn what’s already yours in grace — just receive and walk in it
