
Young-earth creationism and the one Ice Age nobody can explain
Everyone knows there was an Ice Age. It is in the children’s books, the museum dioramas, the cartoon with the sabertooth. Sheets of ice a mile thick sat on Chicago and Manchester. Mammoths walked across a plain where the North Sea is now.
What almost nobody knows is that the Ice Age is a genuinely hard problem — and that it is hardest for the model most people assume has it solved. Ask a young-earth creationist about it and you may expect embarrassment. You will not get it. Of all the arguments in this debate, this is the one where the biblical account is doing real explanatory work.
Let me lay it out fairly, and then let me be clear about where the argument is strong and where it is still a proposal.
Why Making an Ice Age Is Harder Than It Sounds
The instinct is that ice ages come from cold. That instinct is wrong, and this is the single most useful fact in the discussion.
A continental ice sheet is not frozen ground. It is accumulated snowfall — enormous quantities of it, piling up faster than summer can melt it, for centuries. Snow requires atmospheric moisture, and moisture requires evaporation, and evaporation requires warm ocean water. Make the whole planet uniformly frigid and you do not get glaciers; you get a cold desert. Antarctica’s interior is the coldest place on earth and receives less annual precipitation than the Sahara.
So an ice age needs two things at once, and they fight each other: unusually warm oceans to load the atmosphere with water, and unusually cool summers over the continents so the snow that falls does not melt. Any serious model has to deliver both, simultaneously, and hold them for a long time.
The conventional explanation appeals to Milankovitch cycles — slow variations in earth’s orbit and tilt that shift how sunlight is distributed. These are real astronomical facts. The difficulty, acknowledged in the mainstream literature and not only by creationists, is that the resulting change in energy is small, and there is an ongoing debate about how such a modest forcing produces effects that large. Something has to amplify it, and the amplifier is still argued about.
What the Flood Model Proposes
The young-earth proposal is that the Genesis Flood supplies exactly the two conditions the Ice Age requires — as a side effect, not as an add-on.
In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.

Notice the first clause. The text does not describe rain alone. The fountains of the great deep were broken up — a violent release from beneath, which in this model means catastrophic tectonic activity, ocean crust splitting and new hot rock meeting seawater on a global scale.
Two consequences follow directly:
- Warm oceans. Heat added to the oceans during the event leaves them substantially warmer than today, worldwide, for centuries afterward. Evaporation runs far above modern rates. The atmosphere is loaded.
- Cool summers. Volcanism on that scale fills the stratosphere with fine ash and sulfate aerosols. We have watched this happen in miniature: Tambora in 1815 gave the northern hemisphere the “year without a summer” in 1816, with June snow in New England. Sustained volcanic activity keeps continental summers cold enough that winter snow never fully melts.
Warm water below, dirty sky above. That is the combination the Ice Age demands, and in this model it is not a coincidence requiring its own explanation — it is what a global tectonic catastrophe necessarily leaves behind. The ice does not need to be summoned. It falls out of the aftermath.
Three Things the Model Explains Well
One Ice Age, not dozens. A Flood-driven mechanism happens once, because the conditions are produced once and then decay as the oceans cool and the aerosols settle. Peak ice, then meltback, then done. That matches what we actually see on the ground — one dominant glaciation whose landforms cover the northern continents. The conventional model requires a long series of glacial and interglacial cycles, most of which must be reconstructed from proxies rather than from surface geology, because each advance is said to have scraped away the evidence of the last.
The mammoths. The frozen carcasses of Siberia and Alaska are a standing puzzle: large grazing animals, in enormous numbers, living on ground that today supports almost nothing, some of them buried fast enough to preserve soft tissue and stomach contents. A warm-ocean world with mild, moist high-latitude conditions and grassland where tundra now sits is a straightforward home for them — and the sharp continental cooling as the oceans finally gave up their heat is a straightforward way to kill them.
The speed. Ice-age landforms — the great glacial lakes and their catastrophic outburst floods, the scablands, the deep meltwater channels — increasingly read as fast events even in the standard literature. A short, intense glaciation on the order of centuries rather than a slow grind over a hundred thousand years fits the erosional evidence comfortably.
Where Honest People Push Back
Now the other side of the ledger, because a case you can only state one way is not a case.
The strongest objection is the ice cores. Greenland and Antarctic cores are read as containing many tens of thousands of annual layers, which on its face rules out a young timescale entirely. The young-earth answer is that in a post-Flood world with vastly higher snowfall, many of the countable bands are storm or seasonal sub-layers rather than years, and that layer counting becomes interpretive with depth as the ice compresses. That is a real reply and it is testable, but it is contested, and you should say so.
There is also the question of heat. A rapid-tectonics Flood releases a staggering amount of energy, and getting rid of it fast enough to leave a habitable planet is an acknowledged open problem within young-earth research itself — discussed in their own journals, not hidden from view.
And a word about our brothers. Old-earth creationists — men who hold to a real Adam, a real Fall, and God as sovereign Creator — read the glacial record as genuine deep time and the Flood as a real but regionally bounded judgment. They are not compromisers by definition and should not be treated as such. The disagreement here is about the scale of a historical event and how to read the physical record, not about whether God made the world or whether His word is true.
Why This Matters at All
Somebody is wondering why a blog about following Christ spends a thousand words on glaciers. Here is why.
Christians are routinely told that faith means believing things in defiance of evidence, and that anyone who takes Genesis as history has simply stopped thinking. This is the kind of case that answers that charge — not by shouting, but by working. Start from the text, follow the physics, and you get a model that predicts a single ice age, explains the frozen north, and accounts for the moisture problem that the alternative still has to solve with a small orbital nudge and an amplifier nobody has pinned down. You may not find it decisive. But you cannot call it unthinking, and that is the accusation that needed answering.
And there is something else in it. The Flood was judgment — the most sweeping act of judgment in human history before the last one. Yet what it left behind was not a dead planet. It left a world with ice at the poles, rivers cutting new valleys, soil, seasons, and a family stepping off a boat onto ground God had already promised would keep producing.
While the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease.

That promise is spoken directly after the waters go down — and cold and heat is right there in it. The very centuries when the ice was piling up on the northern continents were centuries running on a covenant God had just made. He judged the world, and in the same breath He guaranteed its seasons.
That is the God the rocks belong to. He is severe enough to end an age and faithful enough to promise the next harvest before the mud has dried.
