Most debates about origins start in the wrong place. They start with fossils, or with the age of the earth, or with whether a finch’s beak proves anything.
All of that presupposes something already alive. Natural selection cannot begin until there is something that reproduces, because selection is a filter and a filter needs a population to filter. Before the first self-replicating cell, there is no evolution to appeal to. There is only chemistry.
And that is the question worth asking, because it is the one place where the naturalist has to do the whole job with nothing borrowed: how do you get from chemistry to a cell?
Give the Other Side Its Best Case First
I want to state the naturalistic account at full strength, because a Christian who cannot state the other position fairly has no business answering it.
The case is this. The early earth had abundant simple chemistry — water, carbon compounds, energy from lightning and heat vents and ultraviolet light. Laboratory work has demonstrated that under plausible early conditions, organic building blocks do form on their own: amino acids, the components of sugars, the pieces of nucleotides. Some of these compounds are found in meteorites, meaning the chemistry is not exotic. Given hundreds of millions of years, an entire planet’s worth of chemical reactions, and countless local environments — tidal pools, clay surfaces, deep-sea vents — the argument runs that molecules capable of copying themselves eventually appeared, and once copying began, selection took over.
That is not a stupid argument. It is a serious research program pursued by serious people, and the building-block results are real. Christians who wave at it dismissively are not defending truth; they are avoiding a conversation.
But we have to be equally precise about what those results actually establish.
Letters Are Not Sentences
Suppose I tell you that a printing press exploded and that on inspection of the wreckage we found letters — thousands of them, every character in the alphabet, scattered across the floor.
Impressive. Now tell me how many steps that leaves before we have a legible page.
The distance between a pile of letters and a sentence is not a distance of quantity. It is a distance of kind. More letters do not get you closer. A hundred million years of letters does not get you closer. What a sentence requires is a specific arrangement — one sequence out of an astronomical number of possible sequences, chosen because it means something.
And this is precisely the shape of the origin-of-life problem. Producing amino acids is producing letters. Producing a functional protein means arranging a hundred or more of those letters in one of the vanishingly rare orders that folds into a working machine. Producing a living cell means doing that hundreds of times over, plus a coded instruction set, plus the machinery to read the code, plus a membrane to hold it, plus the ability to copy all of it.
Chemistry explains the letters beautifully. It has never explained the sentence, and it is worth being honest about why: chemical laws produce regularity. Salt crystallizes in the same pattern every time. But a repeating pattern is the opposite of an information-bearing sequence. If the chemistry forced the order, DNA could not carry a message any more than a stack of identical bricks can carry a paragraph. The sequence has to be free in order to mean anything — and free is exactly what chemistry cannot supply.
Three Problems the Popular Version Skips
Three specific difficulties are well known in the literature and almost never mentioned in the documentary version.
- Handedness. Amino acids come in two mirror forms, left and right. Ordinary chemistry produces both in roughly equal measure. Life uses left-handed amino acids almost exclusively, and right-handed sugars. A protein built from a mixture will not fold correctly. So the first step requires not merely the right ingredients but a sorting of them that no known undirected process performs on the necessary scale.
- The chicken and the egg. In every living cell, DNA holds the instructions and proteins do the work — but proteins are required to read and copy the DNA. Each depends on the other. The leading proposal, an early world running on RNA doing both jobs, is ingenious and has real experimental support, but it has never produced an RNA molecule that copies itself from scratch, and the RNA components themselves are notoriously unstable under the very conditions proposed for their formation.
- The reaction runs backwards. The chemical bonds linking amino acids into chains are, in water, more likely to come apart than to form. Water is a solvent that takes such chains apart. The standard picture of life arising in a warm ocean has to explain why the sea did not simply undo the work as fast as it was done.
None of these is a knockdown. Researchers have proposed answers to each, and some are creative. But notice the pattern: every proposed solution involves carefully engineered conditions — a specific mineral surface, a precise cycle of wetting and drying, a particular concentration, protection from the very energy that produced the ingredients. The more successfully a lab reproduces a step, the more that step required an intelligent chemist to set it up.
Answering the Fair Objection
The strongest response to everything above is a good one, and it deserves a straight answer: this is a god-of-the-gaps argument. You are pointing at what science has not explained yet and inserting God. Science has closed such gaps a thousand times.
Fair. So here is the distinction that matters.
A gap argument says: we do not know the cause, therefore God. That is an argument from ignorance, and Christians should refuse it.
A design inference says something different: we do know of a cause capable of producing this effect — and we know of only one. In every case where we can observe the origin of specified information — a contract, a computer program, a message, an inscription — the cause was a mind. Not sometimes. Always. The inference is not from ignorance about chemistry; it is from knowledge about information.
And this is not a religious method. It is the ordinary method of several sciences. Archaeology distinguishes a shaped tool from a broken rock. Forensics distinguishes a fall from a push. Cryptography distinguishes a cipher from noise. A radio astronomer scanning the sky for a signal is running the exact inference — and if he found a long, non-repeating, functionally specific sequence coming from a star, no one would call it god-of-the-gaps. They would call it the discovery of the century.
We found exactly that sequence. It was inside us.
Being Honest About the Reach
Now let me hold my own side to the same standard, because overclaiming is how apologetics loses credibility.
This argument gets you to a mind. It does not get you to a name. It does not settle the age of the earth, it does not adjudicate between believing Christians who read Genesis 1 differently, and it does not by itself tell you that the Designer is good, or personal, or interested in you. Anyone who claims the origin-of-life problem proves the God of the Bible has overshot the evidence and will be corrected in public.
What it does is clear the ground. It removes the assumption that the universe is a closed system of matter that explains itself. And once that assumption is gone, the question stops being whether anyone is there and becomes who — which is a question that cannot be answered by a microscope, because persons are known by revelation, not by inspection.
Where Scripture Puts Life
The Bible never treats life as a property matter accidentally acquired. It treats life as something given, personally, by One who has it in Himself.
Then the LORD God formed man of dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.
Genesis 2:7
Note both halves. The dust is real — we are made of the same elements as the ground under us, and Scripture said so first. But the dust did not organize itself. There is a giver in the sentence.
In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men.
John 1:4
Nor is He served by human hands, as though He needed anything, since He Himself gives to all people life and breath and all things.
Acts 17:25
Paul said that to a crowd of philosophers who prided themselves on hearing every new idea. He did not open with a proof. He opened with an announcement — that the God they had labeled unknown had been sustaining their breath the entire time they debated His existence.
The Part That Is Not Academic
Here is the confrontation, and it is aimed at both sides of this argument.
To the skeptic: you are not neutral about this question, and neither am I. If life is an accident, then you are an accident, and nothing you have ever loved means anything beyond the chemistry that produced the feeling. Most people who hold that view do not live as though they believe it. That gap between the stated philosophy and the actual life is worth examining honestly.
To the believer who wins these arguments: winning is not the goal. A man can be argued into agreeing that a mind exists and walk away from the conversation unchanged, because the distance between a designer exists and I am His and I have wronged Him is not a distance any evidence crosses on its own.
The origin-of-life problem tells you that your existence was intended. It cannot tell you that the One who intended it came looking for you. Only one source claims that, and it stakes the claim on an event in public history rather than a molecule in a lab.

Chemistry can make the letters. It has never written a sentence, and it never will, because that is not what chemistry is for.
Somebody wrote the sentence. And the remarkable claim of the Christian faith is not merely that He wrote it — it is that He then stepped into the page.
