
Nobody has ever measured the age of a rock. We measure something else and then reason backward.
Say “4.5 billion years” and most people hear a fact of the same kind as “this desk is six feet long.” Somebody went and checked. The number came off an instrument.
That is not what happened. And understanding what actually happened is the difference between a Christian who is quietly intimidated by the number and one who can talk about it intelligently — without either sneering at scientists or surrendering the text.
So let me do something unusual for a post in this category. Let me explain the method fairly, including the parts that are genuinely strong, and then show you precisely where the argument stops being a measurement and becomes an inference.
How the Clock Actually Works
Certain atoms are unstable. Uranium-238 decays, through a chain, into lead-206. Potassium-40 becomes argon-40. Rubidium-87 becomes strontium-87. Each of these decays at a rate we can measure in a laboratory today, and those rates are extraordinarily consistent under everything we have thrown at them.
So a geologist takes a rock, measures how much parent isotope is present and how much daughter product, and runs the arithmetic backward to ask: how long would this have taken?
What is measured there is real. The isotope ratios are real. The decay rates are real. Anyone who tells you the whole enterprise is fraud is not being honest with you, and you should not repeat it.
But notice what is not measured. The age is not measured. The age is calculated — and the calculation requires three things nobody was present to observe.
The Three Things You Have to Assume
- Initial conditions. You must know how much daughter product was in the rock when it formed. If lead-206 was present from the start, the rock reads old on day one. Nobody can go back and check the starting ratio; it is supplied by a model.
- A closed system. Nothing added, nothing lost, for the entire history of the sample. Rocks sit in groundwater. They get heated. Argon is a gas, and gases leak. Uranium is chemically mobile. Over the timescales in question, “sealed container” is a large assumption.
- A constant rate. The decay rate has never changed, anywhere, in the history of the universe. We have observed constancy for roughly a century of laboratory work. Extrapolating a century’s observation across billions of years is a philosophical move, not an empirical one.
Every one of those is reasonable. Not one of them is measured. Change any single one and the number changes.
This is what people mean by the difference between operational and historical science. Operational science is repeatable and testable in the present — the decay rate itself, the mass spectrometry, the chemistry. Historical science reconstructs an unobserved past from present evidence plus a set of assumptions. Both are legitimate work. They do not carry the same certainty, and treating them as though they do is where this conversation usually goes wrong.
The Anomalies, Stated Carefully
The most interesting test of any dating method is to run it on something whose age we independently know.
Rocks formed in observed volcanic eruptions have been submitted for potassium-argon dating and have come back with ages of hundreds of thousands to millions of years — for lava that cooled within living memory. The Mount St. Helens dome is the best-known case. Creationist researchers have documented similar results at Mount Ngauruhoe in New Zealand and elsewhere.
Here is the honest completion of that story, and you need it if you are going to use the argument without embarrassing yourself. Geologists respond that these samples contain excess argon inherited from the magma source, and that potassium-argon dating is well known to be unreliable on very young volcanic rock — that the labs were being asked to do something outside the method’s stated range. That is a real answer. It is not a dodge.
But sit with what the exchange concedes. The correction is available only because we already knew the true age from recorded history. Where there is no independent date to check against, that correction is invisible — and the very same assumption that produced the wrong answer at St. Helens is being made silently on every sample from the deep past.
Two other lines are worth knowing. Carbon-14 has a short half-life; after roughly a hundred thousand years there should be none detectable at all. Yet measurable carbon-14 keeps turning up in coal, in diamonds, and in fossil material assigned to the age of the dinosaurs. Mainstream labs attribute it to contamination and background counts. Creationist researchers argue the signal is too consistent across too many independent samples to wave off. And the RATE project’s work on helium retention in zircon crystals argued that helium — a small, fast-diffusing atom — is still present in quantities that should have escaped long ago if the rock is truly ancient.
These are contested. I am not going to tell you they are settled, because they are not. But they are real data points, published and argued in the open, and a thinking believer ought to know both the claim and the counter-claim.
What the Other Side Has Going for It
Fairness requires this paragraph, and skipping it is how apologetics turns into propaganda.
The strongest argument for the conventional dates is not any single method. It is concordance — independent methods, resting on different physics and different assumptions, converging on similar numbers. Isochron techniques were specifically designed to remove the initial-conditions assumption. Add ice cores, seafloor sediment layers, coral banding, and astronomical distance measures, and you have a good many separate clocks agreeing with one another. That is not nothing, and pretending otherwise is dishonest.
And many of the believers making that case love the Bible as much as you do. Old-earth Christians are not compromisers by definition. They confess creation out of nothing, a real Adam, a real Fall, and a Savior who really rose. They read Genesis 1 as inspired history told in a framework or a day-age structure, and they hold that reading because of what they believe the text allows, not merely because of the lab. I disagree with them. I will not call them enemies, and neither should you. The age of the earth is not the gospel.
Why I Still Start With the Text
Here is the actual hinge, and it is not a rock.
Every dating method reconstructs a past nobody watched, using assumptions nobody can verify, and it must assume that present processes are the key to all past processes. That assumption has a name — uniformitarianism — and Scripture names it too, centuries before geology existed:
Know this first of all, that in the last days mockers will come with their mocking, following after their own lusts, and saying, “Where is the promise of His coming? For ever since the fathers fell asleep, all continues just as it was from the beginning of creation.”

“All continues just as it was.” There is the assumption, stated exactly. And Peter’s objection is not that the assumption is unscientific — it is that it deliberately forgets two interruptions: a creation by the word of God, and a global flood (2 Peter 3:5–6). If either of those happened, then the rate of things has not been constant, and every clock calibrated on the assumption that it has been will read long.
I do not hold to a young creation because I distrust chemistry. I hold to it because there is an eyewitness. God was there. He told us the order and the timeframe in a document He inspired, and He repeated the six-day pattern in the Ten Commandments as the ground of the Sabbath (Exodus 20:11) — which is a strange thing to build a law on if it were only a literary framework.
Testimony from a witness who was present outranks inference from a witness who arrived four thousand years late. That is not anti-science. It is how every courtroom in the country ranks evidence.
How to Have This Conversation
- Do not say the dates are made up. Say the measurements are real and the assumptions are debatable. That sentence you can defend all day long.
- Ask one question: “Which parts of that number were measured, and which parts were assumed?” It is not a gotcha. It is the actual question, and a good scientist will answer it honestly.
- Do not stake a man’s soul on it. Nobody has ever been born again by conceding a half-life. The age of the earth is a question about a rock. The gospel is a question about a grave.
Because that is where this lands. The rocks cannot tell you their age without a man’s assumptions supplying half the answer. But there is one date in history that requires no assumptions at all — a tomb outside Jerusalem, occupied on Friday, empty on Sunday, attested by men who were killed rather than take it back.

You can argue about the age of the earth for the rest of your life and never once face the thing that will actually decide your eternity. The stones are old. The question that matters is newer than that, and it is standing in front of you today.
