Eschatology — reading the regathering of Israel soberly against the text.
For nearly nineteen centuries there was no nation of Israel. The people were scattered across the earth, their language a relic of the synagogue, their homeland ruled by one empire after another. If you had told a believer in the year 1850 that within a hundred years there would be a sovereign Jewish state speaking Hebrew in Jerusalem, he would have needed a great deal of faith to believe you. And yet here it is. That is not a small thing. Prophetically, it may be the largest thing standing in front of our generation — and most of the church walks past it without a second look.
Teachers who keep their eyes fixed on Israel — Amir Tsarfati among them — press one point relentlessly: God gave us a nation as a clock. If you want to know roughly what time it is on the prophetic calendar, watch the people He said He would regather. So let’s watch, carefully and without sensationalism, what the text actually claims.
A Valley of Dry Bones
Six centuries before Christ, with Israel in exile and the temple in ruins, God carried the prophet Ezekiel in a vision to a valley full of bones — not freshly fallen, but sun-bleached and scattered. Very many, and very dry. Then came the question that hangs over every hopeless situation.
He said to me, “Son of man, can these bones live?” And I answered, “O Lord GOD, You know.”

As Ezekiel prophesied, there was a rattling. Bone came to bone. Sinew and flesh grew over them. And then breath entered them and they stood up, an exceedingly great army. Lest anyone miss the meaning, God gave the interpretation Himself.
“Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel; behold, they say, ‘Our bones are dried up and our hope has perished. We are completely cut off.'”

Notice the two-stage picture, because it matters. First the bodies are assembled — bone, sinew, flesh — a national body without breath. Then, in a second movement, the breath comes and the nation truly lives. God promised to bring them back to their own land, and then to put His Spirit within them. Physical regathering first; spiritual awakening after. That order will help us read our own moment honestly.
The Nation Reassembled Before Our Eyes
Look at 1948 through that lens and something clicks. A people declared “completely cut off” were reassembled into a national body — territory, government, army, a revived tongue. The bones came together. That is exactly the first stage Ezekiel saw: a nation standing on its feet again in the land God named. It is a staggering fulfillment of something written when it was humanly impossible.
But here is where sobriety must govern our excitement. The same passage tells us the reassembled body is not yet a people breathing with the Spirit of God. A modern secular state can be the fulfillment of stage one while stage two — the national turning to their Messiah — still lies ahead. So we neither dismiss what God has plainly done nor pretend it is more than it is. We say what is true: the clock is running, and the hands have moved a long way.
Jesus Himself pointed to this kind of watching. Of the last generation He said the fig tree would put forth its leaves.
“Now learn the parable from the fig tree: when its branch has already become tender and puts forth its leaves, you know that summer is near; so, you too, when you see all these things, recognize that He is near, right at the door.”

Watching Without Losing Our Heads
Now for the confrontation, because prophecy has a way of producing two equal and opposite errors. The first is scoffing — the shrug that says nothing ever changes, so stop looking up. The second is sensationalism — the breathless certainty that reads every headline as a coded countdown and every conflict as the final war. Both are failures of watchfulness. One sleeps; the other panics. Scripture calls us to a third posture: sober, alert, unafraid.
This is why careful teachers refuse to set dates while still insisting we read the times. When Middle East events flare, we do not run to the newspaper to rewrite the Bible. We run to the Bible to interpret the newspaper — soberly, ready to be patient, unwilling to force the timeline. Ezekiel also foresaw a great coalition coming against a regathered Israel from the north (Ezekiel 38–39). We watch the alignment of nations with interest, not hysteria, holding it loosely and holding the text tightly.
The whole point of the sign is not to make you an armchair analyst of geopolitics. It is to make you ready.
Imminence and the Life It Demands
If the fig tree has leafed out, then the summer Jesus spoke of is not centuries away in our imagination — it is near, at the door. The New Testament never uses that nearness to feed curiosity. It uses it to change how you live tonight.
The night is almost gone, and the day is near. Therefore let us lay aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light.

That is the pastoral payoff of a reborn Israel. God keeps His word — every syllable of it, across nineteen hundred years, against every impossibility. The nation in the valley is proof. And if He kept that promise, He will keep the greater one: the promise that the same Jesus who ascended will return bodily for His own. The sign you can see guarantees the Savior you cannot yet see.
So lift your eyes. Not in fear, and not in feverish date-setting, but in the steady readiness of a servant who knows his Master is on His way. The bones came together in front of the whole world. The One who assembled them is not slow, and He is not finished. Live as though He could come today — because, according to the sign in the land, He very well might.
