Imitators of God: Living Different in a Conforming World

Ephesians 5:1–2 | Romans 12:1–2

📖 Scripture

“Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children. And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.” — Ephesians 5:1–2

“I appeal to you therefore… to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God… Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind.” — Romans 12:1–2

👀 Observation

1️⃣ Copycat Mode

Paul tells us to be “imitators of God.” The word means to copy or mimic. Like a younger sibling copies an older one, we are called to copy our Father. Christianity is not just belief — it is resemblance.

2️⃣ The Motive

We do not imitate God to earn His love.
We imitate Him because we are already loved.
“Beloved children” is our identity before it is our assignment.

3️⃣ The Standard

Christ’s love is not sentimental — it is sacrificial.
He “gave Himself up.” Real love costs something.

4️⃣ The How-To

Romans 12 shows us how this works practically:

  • Present yourself as a living sacrifice
  • Refuse to conform to cultural pressure
  • Be transformed by renewing your mind

Transformation begins internally before it is visible externally.

🛠 Application

🏫 School & Culture Pressure

It’s easy to blend in.
To laugh at what others laugh at.
To join gossip.
To stay silent when someone is mocked.

Not conforming may make you look “uncool,” but imitating Christ will always make you more like Him.

⏳ Sacrificial Love

Being a living sacrifice might look like:

  • Giving your time to help someone study
  • Choosing patience when you’re irritated
  • Speaking kindly when sarcasm would be easier

Love is not just what we feel — it’s what we give.

🧠 Mind Renewal Check

What are you feeding your mind?
Social media. Music. Shows. Conversations.

Ask:
“Is this shaping me to imitate God, or is it shaping me to look like the world?”

Transformation starts with what we allow to influence our thinking.

🔥 The Bigger Picture

The world disciples you every day.
God transforms you every day.

One happens by drifting.
The other happens by deliberate surrender.

The question is not whether you will be shaped.
The question is: By whom?

🙏 Prayer

Lord, thank You that I am already Your beloved child.
Help me live like it.
When I’m tempted to conform, remind me that I belong to You.
Renew my mind. Shape my thoughts.
Show me one person I can love sacrificially today.
Make my life a fragrant offering.
Amen.
