John 5:8–9 (NLT)
“Jesus told him, ‘Stand up, pick up your mat, and walk!’ Instantly, the man was healed! He rolled up his sleeping mat and began walking!”
John 5:16–18 (NLT)
“So the Jewish leaders began harassing Jesus for breaking the Sabbath rules. But Jesus replied, ‘My Father is always working, and so am I.’ So the Jewish leaders tried all the harder to find a way to kill him. For he not only broke the Sabbath, he called God his Father, thereby making himself equal with God.”
👀 O — Observation
- The man had been sick for 38 years — a lifetime of waiting.
- Jesus healed him instantly — proving God still works miracles.
- The miracle happened at the Pool of Bethesda, a place full of desperate hope.
- Instead of celebrating, the religious leaders focused on Sabbath rules.
- Jesus declared He is working just as the Father is working.
- This claim made it clear: Jesus is equal with God.
- After the healing, Jesus slipped away quietly — no self-promotion.
This passage shows both compassion and confrontation — grace for the broken, tension with the proud.
❤️ A — Application
- I can trust God even after long seasons of waiting. Thirty-eight years is not too long for Him.
- Miracles still happen — but they happen in His timing, not mine.
- I must guard against focusing on rules while missing the work of God.
- I should seek Jesus Himself, not just the miracle.
- When God moves, I don’t need public credit — obedience is enough.
🙏 P — Prayer
Lord,
Allow me to seek You more than the miracle.
Help me trust Your timing, even when I have waited a long time.
Protect my heart from religious pride and teach me to rejoice when You work.
You are always working — even when I cannot see it.
Your time, not mine.
