Be Still and Know That I Am God
A Devotional and Practical Guide to Finding Intimacy With God
When Life Never Slows Down
The morning alarm hadn’t even finished buzzing when the rush began. Before my feet hit the floor, my mind was already sprinting—emails to answer, bills to pay, appointments to get to, people waiting on me, and a phone filled with notifications demanding attention. I grabbed my coffee, grabbed my phone, and started the day at full speed, barely aware of how much tension I carried.
At the stoplight, I caught my reflection in the rearview mirror.
I wasn’t just tired—I was wired, strained, and spiritually empty.
It wasn’t that God was absent.
I simply hadn’t slowed down long enough to notice Him.
That day became a blur—a sprint from task to task, conversation to conversation, problem to problem. And when the night finally came, I remember thinking, “I talked to everyone today except the One who matters most.”
That’s when I felt the gentle whisper in my heart:
“Be still.”
It wasn’t guilt.
It wasn’t condemnation.
It was an invitation.
One simple call from a loving Father:
Slow down. Come sit with Me. Let Me calm your soul.
THE STORY OF INTIMACY – When God Speaks in the Stillness
Not long after that hectic day, I intentionally created space to be still.
No phone.
No music.
Just an open Bible, a quiet room, and a heart ready—finally—to listen.
At first, the silence felt awkward.
My mind kept racing.
My thoughts hopped from worry to worry.
But I stayed. I breathed. I waited.
And slowly… the noise within began to settle.
In that stillness, something beautiful happened.
Not a thunderous revelation.
Not an overwhelming vision.
Just a quiet, unmistakable awareness of His presence.
A scripture rose in my heart:
“Be still, and know that I am God.” — Psalm 46:10 (NKJV)
Then a soft prompting followed:
“You don’t have to hold everything together.
I am God. I am with you. Let Me lead. Let Me carry you.”
I didn’t hear an audible voice, but I heard Him.
I didn’t see God with my eyes, but I sensed Him more clearly than I had in months.
He wasn’t asking me to do something for Him.
He was inviting me to simply be with Him.
That moment changed me.
It reminded me that intimacy with God is not found in my productivity…
but in my presence.
Be Still and Know That I Am God
“Be still, and know that I am God;
I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth!”
— Psalm 46:10, NKJV
This verse is not a suggestion.
It’s not a poetic idea.
It’s a divine command wrapped in a loving invitation.
“Be still” means:
- Stop striving
- Loosen your grip
- Withdraw from the noise
- Release the need to control
- Rest your soul
Stillness is not laziness—it’s trust.
It is a spiritual posture of surrender where we stop trying to be God and allow God to be God.
Be Still: The Gateway to Intimacy With God
Stillness is where intimacy begins.
Why?
Because when you quiet your heart…
✔️ You can hear His whisper.
✔️ You become aware of His nearness.
✔️ You stop reacting and start receiving.
✔️ You tune out the noise and tune into His voice.
God often speaks softly—not because He’s distant, but because He’s close.
He invites us to lean in.
Jesus Himself made stillness a priority:
“So He Himself often withdrew into the wilderness and prayed.”
— Luke 5:16, NKJV
When people pressed in… He withdrew.
When demands grew… He stepped away.
When life accelerated… He slowed down.
He didn’t run on empty.
He rested to stay full.
If stillness was Jesus’ pattern, it must become ours.
Stillness Brings Renewal and Clarity
Life can blur your vision.
Noise can drown out truth.
Worry can choke faith.
But stillness clears the fog.
Stillness reminds you:
- God is your refuge
- God is your strength
- God is your defender
- God is in control
- God is enough
When you stop striving, you start seeing.
When you are still, you begin to hear.
When you listen, God speaks.
Sometimes He speaks peace.
Sometimes He speaks correction.
Sometimes He speaks direction.
Sometimes He speaks silence—
but even His silence heals.
A Practical Guide to Practicing Stillness
1. Begin With 5 Minutes of Silence
Start your morning by sitting quietly before God.
No agenda.
Just presence.
Breathe deeply.
Whisper:
“Here I am, Lord.”
2. Choose a Daily Quiet Spot
Your chair, your porch, your car at lunchtime—
a place your soul learns to associate with God’s presence.
3. Disconnect to Reconnect
Turn off your phone for a small block of time.
Eliminate the digital hum.
Stillness requires boundaries.
4. Practice Micro-Moments of Stillness
Before stressful moments, pause.
Before responding in conflict, pause.
Before planning your day, pause.
The soul becomes still faster when practiced in small bursts.
5. Meditate on the Word
Pick a short verse:
- “Be still…”
- “The Lord is my Shepherd…”
- “Fear not…”
- “My peace I give to you…”
Let one phrase anchor you all day.
6. Journal in God’s Presence
Write your thoughts.
Pour out your heart.
Let your journal become a meeting place between you and God.
Prayer
Father, I confess that my life often runs faster than my soul.
I worry, I rush, I strive—and I forget that You are God.
Teach me the sacred rhythm of stillness.
Calm my heart. Quiet my mind.
Help me release the weight I was never meant to carry.
Draw me close so I may know You—not just in theory, but in experience.
Meet me in the silence.
Speak to me in the stillness.
Lead me with Your peace.
And let my intimacy with You grow deeper every time I slow down.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
