Notes – Matthew 27

Matthew 27 – The King Crucified, the Curtain Torn, and the Tomb Sealed

“Then he released Barabbas to them; and when he had scourged Jesus, he delivered Him to be crucified.” (Matthew 27:26, NKJV)
“Truly this was the Son of God!” (v. 54)
“Make it as secure as you know how.” (v. 65)

🔍 CAPTURE THE SCENE (What Do I See?)

  • Judas regrets his betrayal and hangs himself.
  • Jesus is brought before Pontius Pilate.
  • The crowd chooses Barabbas, a criminal, to be released instead of Jesus.
  • Jesus is scourged, mocked, and crowned with thorns.
  • He is crucified at Golgotha between two criminals.
  • Darkness covers the land for 3 hours.
  • Jesus cries out and dies, and the veil in the temple is torn in two.
  • The earth quakes, tombs are opened, and the centurion declares: “This was the Son of God.”
  • Jesus is buried in Joseph of Arimathea’s tomb.
  • The tomb is sealed, and guards are posted.

📖 ANALYZE THE MESSAGE (What Does It Mean?)

1. Judas’ Regret and Death (vv. 1–10)

  • Judas returns the silver to the priests—too late.
  • He hangs himself. The silver is used to buy the Potter’s Field.
  • Fulfillment of Zechariah 11:12–13.

Lesson: Regret without repentance leads to ruin. Only Jesus can redeem betrayal.

2. Jesus Before Pilate (vv. 11–26)

  • Jesus remains mostly silent.
  • Pilate offers to release one prisoner—the people choose Barabbas.
  • Pilate washes his hands, but the people say, “His blood be on us…”

Lesson: The crowd chose a murderer over the Messiah—and prophecy was fulfilled in their rebellion.

3. Mocked and Scourged (vv. 27–31)

  • Soldiers dress Jesus in scarlet, crown Him with thorns, and mock Him: “Hail, King of the Jews!”
  • He is beaten and led away to be crucified.

Lesson: The King of Kings is humiliated by His own creation—yet remains silent in strength.

4. The Crucifixion (vv. 32–44)

  • Simon of Cyrene carries His cross.
  • Jesus is crucified at Golgotha.
  • The sign above Him reads: “THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS.”
  • He is mocked by religious leaders and the thieves on either side.

Lesson: They mocked the truth on the sign, but He truly was the King—dying for the very ones who mocked Him.

5. Jesus Dies (vv. 45–56)

  • Darkness covers the land from noon to 3 PM.
  • Jesus cries, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”
  • He dies, and the veil of the temple is torn in two.
  • Earthquake. Tombs opened. A Roman centurion declares: “Truly this was the Son of God!”

Lesson: At the moment of death, the way to God was opened—Jesus bore our sin to tear down the veil.

6. Jesus Is Buried (vv. 57–61)

  • Joseph of Arimathea places Jesus in his own new tomb.
  • A large stone is rolled in front.

Lesson: Though buried, this was not the end—it was a borrowed tomb for a brief stay.

7. The Tomb Secured (vv. 62–66)

  • Religious leaders ask Pilate to seal the tomb and post guards.
  • They fear the disciples will steal the body.
  • Pilate says, “Make it as secure as you know how.”

Lesson: Man tried to seal the Son of God in a grave—but no stone can stop a resurrection.

🔄 COMPARE WITH THE REST OF SCRIPTURE

  • Isaiah 53 – The suffering servant.
  • Psalm 22 – “My God, my God, why have You forsaken Me?”
  • Zechariah 12:10 – They will look on Me whom they pierced.
  • 2 Corinthians 5:21 – He became sin for us.
  • Hebrews 10:19–20 – The veil was torn—now we have access.

🛠 EXECUTE – How Does This Affect My Life?

Key Principle: Jesus’ death wasn’t an accident—it was the plan of God for your salvation.

  1. Don’t Let Regret Win
    • Be like Peter, not Judas. Run to Jesus in failure, not away from Him.
  2. Choose the King
    • Every day you must choose: Barabbas or Jesus? Comfort or surrender?
  3. Stand in Awe of the Cross
    • He bore your shame. Worship Him with reverence and love.
  4. Live Like the Veil is Torn
    • You have full access to God. Don’t live like you’re still on the outside.
  5. Rest in His Burial, but Wait for the Third Day
    • What looks like defeat is often the setup for resurrection.
