Matthew 24 – Signs of the End and the Return of the King
“And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars… but the end is not yet.” (Matthew 24:6, NKJV)
“Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven…” (v. 30)
🔍 CAPTURE THE SCENE (What Do I See?)
- Jesus leaves the temple and tells His disciples it will be destroyed.
- On the Mount of Olives, the disciples ask Him:
“When will these things happen? What will be the sign of Your coming, and of the end of the age?” - Jesus answers with a sweeping prophetic overview:
- Birth pains: wars, famines, earthquakes, deception.
- Tribulation and persecution.
- The abomination of desolation.
- Great tribulation like never before.
- The sun darkened, moon not giving light—cosmic signs.
- The Son of Man coming on the clouds.
- He ends with warnings: be ready, stay awake, be faithful.
📖 ANALYZE THE MESSAGE (What Does It Mean?)
1. The Destruction of the Temple (v. 1–2)
- Jesus predicts not one stone will be left on another.
- Fulfilled in 70 AD when Rome destroyed Jerusalem.
Lesson: Jesus’ prophecy is precise and trustworthy—past fulfillment guarantees future fulfillment.
2. The Disciples’ Threefold Question (v. 3)
- When will the temple be destroyed?
- What’s the sign of Your coming?
- What’s the sign of the end of the age?
Lesson: Jesus answers not just about 70 AD, but extends to the end of the world.
3. Signs of the Beginning of Sorrows (vv. 4–8)
- False messiahs, wars, famines, earthquakes.
- “These are the beginning of birth pains.”
Lesson: Don’t panic—these are signs, not the end.
4. Tribulation and Persecution (vv. 9–14)
- Believers will be hated, betrayed, and killed.
- Lawlessness will increase; love will grow cold.
- The gospel will be preached to all nations, then the end comes.
Lesson: The gospel must go out before Jesus returns.
5. The Abomination of Desolation (v. 15)
- Spoken by Daniel—Antichrist will desecrate the temple.
- A signal for those in Judea to flee immediately.
Lesson: This marks the midpoint of the 7-year Tribulation (see Daniel 9:27).
6. Great Tribulation (vv. 16–28)
- Unparalleled suffering.
- False christs and false signs will abound.
- “Unless those days were shortened, no flesh would be saved.”
Lesson: God’s mercy limits judgment, even in wrath.
7. The Coming of the Son of Man (vv. 29–31)
- After the Tribulation, cosmic signs will signal His return.
- Jesus returns in glory, and His angels gather His elect.
Lesson: This is not the Rapture—this is the Second Coming at the end of the Tribulation.
8. The Parable of the Fig Tree & Warnings (vv. 32–51)
- When you see signs, know the time is near.
- No one knows the day or hour.
- Be faithful, wise, and ready at all times.
Lesson: Live as if Jesus could return any moment—because He can.
