Genesis 40 – Dreams in the Dungeon: Joseph Interprets, But Is Forgotten
“Do not interpretations belong to God? Tell them to me, please.” (Genesis 40:8, NKJV)
“Yet the chief butler did not remember Joseph, but forgot him.” (v. 23)
🔍 CAPTURE THE SCENE (What Do I See?)
- Pharaoh becomes angry with two officials: the chief butler (cupbearer) and the chief baker.
- He imprisons them in the same prison where Joseph is.
- Joseph, now overseeing the prison, notices their sadness one morning.
- They each had a dream the night before but don’t know what it means.
- Joseph assures them interpretations belong to God.
- The butler’s dream: A vine with three branches blossoms and produces grapes. Pharaoh’s cup is in his hand again.
- Interpretation: In three days, he’ll be restored to his position.
- The baker’s dream: Three baskets of bread on his head, birds eating from the top.
- Interpretation: In three days, Pharaoh will execute him.
- Joseph asks the butler: “Remember me when you are restored.”
- Both dreams come true, exactly as Joseph said.
- But the butler forgets Joseph.
