Genesis 17 – Covenant Confirmed: New Names, New Sign, Same God
“I am Almighty God; walk before Me and be blameless.” (Genesis 17:1, NKJV)
“No longer shall your name be called Abram, but your name shall be Abraham… I will make you exceedingly fruitful.” (v. 5)
🔍 CAPTURE THE SCENE (What Do I See?)
- Abram is now 99 years old—13 years after Ishmael’s birth.
- God appears and introduces Himself as El Shaddai (God Almighty).
- God commands Abram: “Walk before Me and be blameless.”
- God changes his name from Abram (exalted father) to Abraham (father of many nations).
- Sarai’s name becomes Sarah (princess).
- God reaffirms the covenant and says the promised son will come through Sarah.
- God institutes circumcision as the sign of the covenant—every male to be circumcised.
- Abraham immediately obeys, circumcising himself, Ishmael, and every male in his household that very day.
📖 ANALYZE THE MESSAGE (What Does It Mean?)
1. God Calls Abram to Holiness (vv. 1–8)
- El Shaddai means all-sufficient God—able to fulfill what He promises.
- God calls for a blameless walk—not sinless perfection, but a life of integrity and obedience.
- The covenant is reaffirmed: descendants, nations, land, and a lasting promise.
2. New Names = New Identity (vv. 5, 15)
- Abram ➝ Abraham: not just exalted, but fruitful for many.
- Sarai ➝ Sarah: not just a wife, but royalty—a mother of nations.
- God changes their names to match His promise, not their present circumstances.
3. Circumcision: A Sign of the Covenant (vv. 9–14)
- Physical circumcision was to reflect an inner commitment.
- It separated the people of God from the world.
- Refusal to participate = breaking the covenant.
4. A Promise That Defies Biology (vv. 15–22)
- Abraham laughs—he and Sarah are past childbearing years.
- God makes it clear: “Sarah shall bear you a son.”
- God names the son Isaac (laughter).
- God blesses Ishmael, but His covenant is with Isaac.
5. Obedience Without Delay (vv. 23–27)
- Abraham circumcises every male in his house the same day.
- Faith that obeys immediately honors God.

- Receive Your God-Given Identity
- God renamed Abram and Sarai to match their destiny.
