Notes – Genesis 15

Genesis 15 – The Covenant of Blood: Righteousness by Faith

“And he believed in the Lord, and He accounted it to him for righteousness.” (Genesis 15:6, NKJV)
“On the same day the Lord made a covenant with Abram…” (Genesis 15:18)

🔍 CAPTURE THE SCENE (What Do I See?)

  • God appears to Abram in a vision, saying: “Do not be afraid… I am your shield and your exceedingly great reward.”
  • Abram responds with honest doubt—he has no heir.
  • God takes him outside and says: “Count the stars…”
  • Abram believes God—and that faith is credited as righteousness.
  • God reaffirms the land promise from the river of Egypt to the Euphrates.
  • A covenant ceremony is performed: Abram cuts animals in half, and God alone walks through the blood path in a flaming torch and smoking oven—symbolizing unconditional covenant.
  • God prophesies that Abram’s descendants will suffer in Egypt 400 years, but then return with great possessions.

📖 ANALYZE THE MESSAGE (What Does It Mean?)

1. Faith Over Feelings (vv. 1–6)

  • Abram is afraid—he’s getting older, and God’s promise hasn’t materialized.
  • God doesn’t rebuke him; He reassures and redirects: “Look at the stars.”
  • Abram’s simple belief becomes the pattern for salvation.
  • This is the first time righteousness is given by faith in Scripture.

2. God Confirms the Promise (vv. 7–11)

  • God reminds Abram: “I brought you out to give you this land.”
  • Abram asks, “How shall I know?”—a sincere desire for confirmation.
  • God tells him to bring animals—setting up a blood covenant.
  • Abram waits as the sun sets—still no movement from God yet.

3. The Covenant Is Sealed by God Alone (vv. 12–21)

  • A deep sleep falls on Abram, symbolizing that God alone is making the covenant.
  • God gives a prophecy: Israel will be enslaved 400 years (fulfilled in Exodus).
  • The covenant is cut—God, as smoke and fire, passes between the pieces.
  • This ancient Near Eastern practice symbolized: “If I break this covenant, may I become like these animals.”
  • Only God walks through—the covenant is unconditional and eternal.

🔄 COMPARE WITH THE REST OF SCRIPTURE

  • Justification by Faith:
    • Romans 4:3 – “Abraham believed God…”
    • Galatians 3:6–9 – All who believe are sons of Abraham.
    • Hebrews 11:8–10 – He looked for a heavenly city whose builder is God.
  • God’s Blood Covenant Fulfilled in Christ:
    • Luke 22:20 – “This cup is the new covenant in My blood…”
    • Hebrews 9:15–17 – Jesus is the Mediator of a new covenant.
  • God’s Promise of the Land:
    • Deuteronomy 1:8 – “See, I have set the land before you…”
    • Psalm 105:8–11 – He remembers His covenant forever.

🛠 EXECUTE – How Does This Affect My Life?

Key Principle: We are not saved by what we do, but by what God has done. The blood covenant points forward to the cross.

  1. Believe God Even When You Don’t See
    • Abram had no child, but believed anyway.
    • Don’t wait for proof—walk by faith, not sight.
  2. Ask God Honest Questions
    • God didn’t condemn Abram for asking “How will I know?”
    • Faith includes questions—but anchors them in God’s faithfulness.
  3. Rest in a Covenant You Didn’t Have to Cut
    • God alone walked through the sacrifice.
    • Salvation is not a contract; it’s a covenant sealed in blood—Christ’s blood.
  4. Live as Righteous by Faith, Not Works
    • You are not “earning” anything.
    • Like Abram, righteousness is credited to you when you simply believe.
  5. God’s Timing Includes Preparation
    • The promise would take generations—and involve waiting, slavery, and deliverance.
    • Trust God’s timing, even when the wait feels like a detour.
