Isaiah 59 – Sin Separates, but the Redeemer Draws Near
“Behold, the Lord’s hand is not shortened, that it cannot save… but your iniquities have separated you from your God.” (Isaiah 59:1–2, NKJV)
“The Redeemer will come to Zion, and to those who turn from transgression.” (v. 20)
🔍 CAPTURE THE SCENE (What Do I See?)
- God clarifies: the problem is not with Him—He’s willing and able to save.
- The real issue is sin—which has created a wall between people and God.
- Isaiah catalogs a list of national sins—lies, injustice, violence, and hypocrisy.
- Yet there is hope: when no one else could intervene, God Himself stepped in.
- The chapter ends with the promise of a Redeemer, a new covenant, and God’s Spirit and Word remaining forever.
📖 ANALYZE THE MESSAGE (What Does It Mean?)
1. The Real Barrier: Sin, Not God’s Silence (vv. 1–2)
- God isn’t distant or unable to help—the issue is unrepentant sin.
- Sin cuts off communication and breaks intimacy with God.
2. A Nation Gone Wrong (vv. 3–8)
- Hands are defiled with blood.
- Lies are spoken freely.
- No one calls for justice; they rely on empty arguments and deceit.
- Violence and crooked paths are the result.
- “The way of peace they have not known…”
3. A Personal and National Confession (vv. 9–15)
- Isaiah begins to confess corporately:
- “Justice is far from us.”
- “We look for light, but there is darkness.”
- “Our sins testify against us… we know our iniquities.”
- Truth has fallen in the streets, and the righteous are marginalized.
4. God Takes Action Himself (vv. 16–19)
- God saw there was no intercessor—so He intervened personally.
- He put on righteousness like armor, and repays enemies with judgment.
- This is a preview of Christ as both Savior and Judge.
- The fear of the Lord will be known from the west to the rising of the sun.
5. Promise of the Redeemer (vv. 20–21)
- God promises a Redeemer will come to Zion—to those who repent.
- A covenant is declared: His Spirit and His Word will remain forever.
- This is both Messianic and millennial in scope—Jesus at His first and second coming.

Key Principle: God is never the problem—sin is. But He doesn’t leave us there. He steps in with righteousness, justice, and redemption. All He asks is that we repent and return.
- Acknowledge the Wall
- Sin creates distance. Don’t blame God for silence—look inward and confess.
- Don’t Rationalize Injustice
- God sees corporate sin, not just individual failures.
- Stand up for truth, even when culture doesn’t.
- Celebrate God’s Intervention
- When no one else could save—you couldn’t earn it—God put on armor and fought for you.
- That’s the gospel.
- Turn and Be Redeemed
- The Redeemer comes not for the proud, but for those who turn from transgression.
- Repentance is the door to restoration.
- Live in the Covenant
- The Holy Spirit and the Word are your lifelong companions.
- Don’t neglect either—they are the evidence that you are His.
