Climbing Through Fear
How Trust in God Helped Me Face Heights—and Life
I’ll never forget strike training back in 2009.
We were prepping for a scenario that required speed, obedience, and nerves of steel. But one look at the 16-foot ladder we had to climb, and all my training blurred behind one gut-wrenching reality:
I was terrified of heights.
This wasn’t an irrational phobia—I could feel the danger. The wobble. The height. My mind screamed, “You can’t do this.”
And then my instructor spoke: “You’re safe. One step at a time.”
He wasn’t rattled. He wasn’t forceful. Just calm and confident. And in that moment, I didn’t need to eliminate fear—I just needed to listen to the one who knew the way.
So I climbed.
Each step was shaky. Each moment was a fight. But I reached the top—not because I stopped feeling fear, but because I trusted someone more than I trusted the fear.
That climb became a picture of what it means to walk by faith when fear grips your life.
What Does God Say About Fear?
Fear isn’t a sin—but staying stuck in it is not what God wants for us.
The Bible is packed with reminders that we’re not alone, and that fear is not our inheritance—power is.
“Fear not, for I am with you;
Be not dismayed, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you,
Yes, I will help you,
I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.”
— Isaiah 41:10 (NKJV)
4 Biblical Truths to Help You Overcome Fear
(and how to live them out)
1. God Is With You—So You Don’t Have to Panic
Fear says, “You’re alone.” God says, “I’m right here.”
God never promised we’d avoid the “valley of the shadow of death”—but He did promise to walk through it with us. You might not see Him right away, but His presence surrounds you when your world starts spinning.
“Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil;
For You are with me;
Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.”
— Psalm 23:4 (NKJV)
Live it out:
- Start your day acknowledging God’s presence. Say: “God, I know You’re with me—even when I’m afraid.”
- When fear hits, stop and pray: “Lord, I don’t feel strong—but You are.”
- Use physical reminders (verses on your mirror, worship music, journaling) to ground yourself in His nearness.
2. Fear is Not from God—Power Is
God doesn’t use fear to shape you—He uses truth. The enemy thrives on fear to cloud your judgment, steal your peace, and stop your progress. But God’s Spirit brings power, love, and a clear, focused mind.
“For God has not given us a spirit of fear,
but of power and of love and of a sound mind.”
— 2 Timothy 1:7 (NKJV)
Live it out:
- Memorize this verse and repeat it when fear starts speaking louder than faith.
- Identify fear-based thoughts and challenge them with Scripture.
- Ask the Holy Spirit to renew your mind daily so you respond with clarity, not panic.
3. Fear Is a Cue to Trust, Not a Wall to Retreat From
David ran toward Goliath while everyone else froze. Not because he didn’t feel fear—but because he knew who was bigger than fear. Faith doesn’t erase fear—it puts it in its place.
“Whenever I am afraid,
I will trust in You.”
— Psalm 56:3 (NKJV)
Live it out:
- When fear hits, don’t freeze—pause and redirect it to trust.
- Journal what you’re afraid of, then list three truths from God’s Word to counter each fear.
- Keep walking. Don’t wait for courage to come—obedience creates courage.
4. You’re Never Alone—God Walks With You Through the Fire
God never sends you into hard moments to handle them alone. He promises His presence, His strength, and His grace to sustain you—not just on the mountaintops, but in the valleys and storms.
“Be strong and of good courage,
do not fear nor be afraid of them;
for the Lord your God, He is the One who goes with you.
He will not leave you nor forsake you.”
— Deuteronomy 31:6 (NKJV)
Live it out:
- Reflect on past victories where God carried you through. Let His faithfulness fuel your future.
- Speak truth when fear whispers. Say out loud: “God is with me. I will not be shaken.”
- Lean on a godly friend to walk with you and pray over your fears.
Final Word: Faith Isn’t About Feeling Brave—It’s About Trusting a Faithful God
The ladder didn’t shrink that day. The fear didn’t vanish. But trust beat terror. Step by step.
You may feel afraid right now. That’s okay. But don’t let fear define you.
Let faith lead you.
“The Lord is my light and my salvation;
Whom shall I fear?
The Lord is the strength of my life;
Of whom shall I be afraid?”
— Psalm 27:1 (NKJV)
You don’t have to be fearless to be faithful.
Just take the next step—knowing God is holding the ladder.
