Zechariah 13 – A Fountain for Cleansing and a Refined Remnant
“In that day a fountain shall be opened… for sin and for uncleanness.” (Zechariah 13:1, NKJV)

“They will call on My name, and I will answer them.” (v. 9)

- A fountain of cleansing is opened to the house of David—a picture of salvation and purification.
- Idolatry and false prophets will be completely removed from the land.
- A powerful Messianic prophecy follows: the Shepherd is struck, and the sheep are scattered.
- The chapter ends with a vision of refining fire, where a remnant is preserved and fully committed to God.
📖 ANALYZE THE MESSAGE (What Does It Mean?)
1. A Cleansing Fountain (v. 1)
- This fountain represents the blood of Christ—freely offered to cleanse from sin and impurity.
- It’s directly connected to the mourning of Zechariah 12:10—after Israel sees the One they pierced, salvation follows.
2. Removal of Idolatry and False Prophets (vv. 2–6)
- God promises to cut off the names of idols and false prophets from Israel.
- Even family members won’t tolerate deception anymore—truth will be honored above tradition.
- Verse 6 contains a cryptic and possibly Messianic reference:“What are these wounds between your arms?”
“Those with which I was wounded in the house of my friends.”- This may allude again to Jesus being wounded by His own people, although interpretations vary.
3. Strike the Shepherd (v. 7)
- A direct Messianic prophecy: Jesus quotes this in Matthew 26:31 at the Last Supper.
- The “sword” is commanded to strike the Shepherd—Christ—resulting in the scattering of His disciples (the sheep).
- This event ultimately leads to both the cross and the global dispersion of Israel.
4. The Purification of the Remnant (vv. 8–9)
- Two-thirds in the land will be cut off and die—a reference to coming judgment.
- One-third will be refined like silver—the remnant of Israel who survive the tribulation and call on the Lord.
- God affirms them as His people, and they respond, “The Lord is my God.”

- Refined Remnant:
- Romans 11:5 – “There is a remnant according to the election of grace.”
- Malachi 3:2–3 – God purifies like a refiner’s fire.

Key Principle: God offers cleansing through Christ, but He will also refine and purify His people through trials. Every person must decide whether to reject or receive the Shepherd.
- Run to the Fountain
- There is no sin too great for the cleansing blood of Jesus.
- Stop trying to clean yourself—go to the Source.
- Reject False Voices
- In the last days, deception increases.
- Know the Word well enough to discern truth from error.
- The Shepherd Was Struck—for You
- This prophecy confirms Jesus’ identity and mission.
- He chose to be struck so you could be saved.
- Not All Will Be Saved—But God Preserves a Remnant
- God is just—some will refuse Him and be cut off.
- But God is merciful—He will always keep a remnant.
- Refining Is Not Rejection
- When you’re tested by fire, it’s not punishment—it’s preparation.
- Let God refine your life so He can reveal Himself through you.
