Ezekiel 8 – Visions of Hidden Idolatry
“Son of man, do you see what they are doing… to drive Me far from My sanctuary?” (Ezekiel 8:6, NKJV)
🔍 CAPTURE THE SCENE (What Do I See?)
In the sixth year, Ezekiel is sitting in his house when he is lifted up in a vision to the temple in Jerusalem:
- God shows Ezekiel abominations inside His holy temple—idolatry hidden behind walls and doors.
- Four disturbing scenes unfold:
- An idol of jealousy at the north gate.
- Elders secretly worshiping idols in a hidden room.
- Women weeping for Tammuz (a pagan fertility god).
- Men bowing to the sun—facing east, turning their backs on God.
- The vision ends with God saying He will not hear their cries—His wrath is coming.
📖 ANALYZE THE MESSAGE (What Does It Mean?)
- Sin Behind Closed Doors (vv. 1–12)
- God brings Ezekiel behind the scenes—through walls and secret rooms—to expose what people think is hidden.
- Even the elders of Israel, the spiritual leaders, are steeped in idolatry.
- Sin thrives in secrecy, but God sees everything.
- False Worship Invades God’s House (vv. 13–16)
- From mourning for Tammuz to bowing to the sun, the temple is filled with pagan rituals.
- They have turned their backs—literally and spiritually—on the presence of God.
- This is not ignorance—it’s deliberate replacement of God with idols.
- God Is Provoked and Withdraws (vv. 17–18)
- The people think, “The Lord does not see us” (v. 12).
- But God says, “I will act in fury… I will not hear them.”
- This is not just judgment—it’s the heartbreak of a rejected relationship.

- Hidden Sin Revealed:
- Hebrews 4:13 – “All things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account.”
- Luke 12:2 – “Nothing is covered that will not be revealed.”
- Jealousy of God:
- Exodus 20:5 – “I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God.”
- Deuteronomy 32:16 – “They provoked Him to jealousy with foreign gods.”
- Temple Defilement:
- Jeremiah 7:30 – “They have set their abominations in the house which is called by My name.”
- Matthew 21:13 – Jesus drives out the money changers: “My house shall be called a house of prayer…”
- Sun Worship and Apostasy:
- Deuteronomy 4:19 – Warning not to worship the sun, moon, or stars.
- Romans 1:25 – “They exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and worshiped… created things…”

Key Principle: God is not just watching our public life—He is Lord over the hidden places too.
- Invite God Into the Secret Places
- What’s hiding behind your own walls? Bitterness, lust, pride?
- Don’t wait for exposure. Invite God in and let Him clean house.
- Don’t Mix the Holy and the Pagan
- The people in Ezekiel’s vision didn’t reject religion—they blended it with idols.
- God demands purity in worship—not a mix of truth and compromise.
- Face God, Don’t Turn Your Back
- The men in the temple were bowing to the sun, facing east, while turning their backs on the altar.
- Is your heart fully turned toward Him—or just partially facing?
- God’s Patience Has a Limit
- They thought God didn’t see or care. They were wrong.
- Delayed judgment is not denial of judgment. God always acts—eventually.
