Ezekiel 15 – The Worthless Vine

“Behold, it is given to the fire for fuel… so I will give up the inhabitants of Jerusalem.” (Ezekiel 15:6, NKJV)

🔍 CAPTURE THE SCENE (What Do I See?)

This is a short but piercing parable. God speaks through Ezekiel using the image of a vine:

God asks: What value does a wooden vine have, compared to other trees?
Unlike oaks or cedars, a vine is useless for building—its only purpose is to bear fruit.
If it doesn’t bear fruit, it’s fuel for fire—and even after it’s scorched, it’s good for nothing.
God applies this to Jerusalem—His vine. Since it’s fruitless, He will give it over to judgment.

A Vine Without Fruit Is Worthless (vv. 1–5)
- God’s point is clear: a vine’s only value is in what it produces.
- If it bears no fruit, it’s more disposable than other trees—it has no alternate purpose.
Israel Was Chosen to Bear Fruit (vv. 6–8)
- God planted Israel to display His glory, but they became spiritually barren.
- Their purpose was not status or comfort, but fruitful obedience.
- Without fruit, they’re no different from the nations—and thus, subject to fire.
Fire as a Symbol of Judgment
- The fire is God’s refining judgment—and Jerusalem, already “singed,” will be fully consumed.
- God’s discipline has limits, but also layers—partial judgment warns of final judgment.

Israel as the Vine:
- Psalm 80:8–16 – God brought a vine out of Egypt and planted it.
- Isaiah 5:1–7 – The vineyard yielded wild grapes; judgment follows.
- John 15:1–6 – Jesus says, “I am the true vine… every branch that does not bear fruit is taken away.”
Fire as Judgment:
- Hebrews 12:29 – “Our God is a consuming fire.”
- 1 Corinthians 3:13 – Each person’s work will be tested by fire.
Fruitlessness Leads to Judgment:
- Matthew 7:19 – “Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.”
- Luke 13:6–9 – The barren fig tree is given time, but faces removal if it doesn’t bear fruit.

Key Principle: You were created for a purpose—to bear fruit for God. When that purpose is abandoned, only judgment remains.

Check Your Fruit
- Are you producing what God planted you for—love, obedience, repentance, witness?
- Don’t settle for leaves when God desires lasting fruit.
Don’t Assume Position Equals Protection
- Just because you’re “in the vineyard” doesn’t mean you’re pleasing the Vinedresser.
- Israel had the temple and covenant—but lost its purpose.
Partial Judgment Is a Warning
- The “scorching” of Jerusalem wasn’t final—but a signal to repent.
- Don’t wait until the fire consumes everything—turn back now.
Jesus Is the True Vine
- Our fruitfulness isn’t in effort—it’s in abiding in Him (John 15).
- No vine, no fruit. No fruit, no proof of life.
