Romans 7 – The Struggle Within

“For what I will to do, that I do not practice; but what I hate, that I do.” (Romans 7:15, NKJV)
“O wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? I thank God—through Jesus Christ our Lord!” (Romans 7:24–25)
🔍 CAPTURE THE SCENE (What do I see?)
Paul continues his explanation of life under grace by clarifying the role of the Law. The Law is not sin—but it exposes sin. It’s like a mirror that shows us the dirt but can’t clean us. This chapter explores:
- The illustration of marriage: a person is bound to a spouse while the spouse lives, but free to remarry if the spouse dies.
- Similarly, believers have died to the Law through Christ and now belong to Him.
- The Law reveals sin—it even arouses sinful desires by showing us what we “shouldn’t” do.
- Sin takes advantage of the Law to produce death.
- Paul affirms that the Law is holy and good, but sin uses it for evil.
- He describes the internal struggle:
- “I want to do right, but I don’t.”
- “I hate sin, but I keep doing it.”
- There’s a war between his mind and his flesh.
- He cries out in desperation: “Who will deliver me?”
- His answer: Jesus Christ our Lord.
📖 ANALYZE THE MESSAGE (What does it mean?)
- Dead to the Law, Alive to Christ (vv. 1–6)
Like a widow free to remarry, we are no longer bound to the Law—we now belong to Jesus and serve in the newness of the Spirit. - The Law Isn’t the Problem—Sin Is (vv. 7–13)
The Law reveals what sin is (“You shall not covet”). But it also triggers rebellion in our hearts. The Law brings knowledge—but not power. - The Inner Battle (vv. 14–23)
Paul shares a deeply personal reality: he wants to do what’s right, but sin still pulls him back. There’s a tension between the renewed mind and the sin-influenced flesh. - The Cry for Deliverance (vv. 24–25)
He ends not with despair but hope: Deliverance comes only through Jesus Christ. Chapter 8 will pick up with the power of the Spirit.
🔁 COMPARE THIS CHAPTER WITH THE REST OF SCRIPTURE
- The Law as a Mirror:
- James 1:23–25 – The Law shows us who we are
- Galatians 3:24 – The Law was our tutor to lead us to Christ
- Inner Conflict of the Believer:
- Psalm 51:5, 10 – Born in sin, but crying for a clean heart
- Galatians 5:17 – The flesh wars against the Spirit
- Victory in Christ:
- 2 Corinthians 12:9 – His grace is sufficient
- 1 John 1:9 – If we confess, He forgives
🙌 EXECUTE (So what? How does this affect my life?)
Principle: The Christian life is not about perfection—it’s about direction. The Law can expose, but only Jesus can transform.
- Recognize the Battle Is Real—and Common
If you’re struggling with sin, you’re not alone. Even Paul felt torn. Don’t fake it—face it with God’s help. - Stop Looking to Rules for Rescue
The Law is good, but powerless to save. Don’t rely on self-effort. Only grace through Jesus can change your heart. - Confess and Cry Out Daily
The flesh doesn’t just go away. But every day you can say, “Lord, I need You to rescue me again today.” - Serve in the Newness of the Spirit
You’re not under the old letter of the Law. Walk in the power of the Spirit, which we’ll explore in Romans 8. - Thank God Even in the Struggle
Don’t wait until you’re “fixed” to worship. Thank God now—because Jesus already won the war, even when you’re in the fight.
