Notes – Romans 15

Romans 15 – Unity, Hope, and the Example of Christ

“Now may the God of patience and comfort grant you to be like-minded toward one another…” (Romans 15:5, NKJV)
“Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing…” (Romans 15:13, NKJV)

🔍 CAPTURE THE SCENE (What do I see?)

Paul is wrapping up the main body of his letter by:

  • Encouraging strong believers to bear with the weak, not just please themselves.
  • Pointing to Christ’s selflessness as our example.
  • Emphasizing that the Scriptures were written to give us hope.
  • Praying for unity and hope among believers.
  • Showing how Christ became a servant to the Jews and a Savior to the Gentiles.
  • Rejoicing that the Gentiles now glorify God for His mercy.
  • Expressing his deep commitment to ministry, especially to the Gentiles.
  • Asking for prayers for his mission and safety.
  • Looking forward to visiting Rome on his way to Spain.

📖 ANALYZE THE MESSAGE (What does it mean?)

  1. Please Others, Not Ourselves (vv. 1–3)
Strong believers must carry the burdens of the weak. Following Christ means sacrificing comfort for others’ growth.
  2. Find Hope in the Scriptures (v. 4)
The Word was written not just for information—but for encouragement and hope in every generation.
  3. Pray for Unity and Joy (vv. 5–7, 13)
Paul prays that the Church would be like-minded, glorifying God with one voice, full of joy, peace, and hope.
  4. Christ Came for Both Jews and Gentiles (vv. 8–12)
Jesus was a servant to the circumcision (Jews), but also a light to the Gentiles, fulfilling Scripture and proving God’s mercy for all.
  5. Paul’s Ministry to the Gentiles (vv. 14–21)
Paul knew his calling: to preach Christ where He wasn’t yet known. He didn’t want to build on someone else’s foundation.
  6. Paul’s Travel Plans and Prayer Request (vv. 22–33)
Paul longs to visit the Romans and share fellowship. But first, he must deliver financial aid to the poor saints in Jerusalem. He asks for prayer—especially for protection and favor with Jewish believers.

🔁 COMPARE THIS CHAPTER WITH THE REST OF SCRIPTURE

  • Selflessness of Christ:
    • Philippians 2:5–8 – Jesus humbled Himself, becoming a servant
    • Mark 10:45 – The Son of Man came to serve, not to be served
  • Hope Through the Word:
    • Psalm 119:49–50 – “Your word has given me life”
    • 2 Timothy 3:16–17 – All Scripture is inspired by God and useful
  • Jew and Gentile Reconciliation:
    • Ephesians 2:14–16 – Christ broke down the dividing wall
    • Isaiah 11:10 – Paul quotes this prophecy about Gentiles seeking Christ
  • Missionary Zeal:
    • Acts 13:47 – “I have set you as a light to the Gentiles”
    • Matthew 28:19 – Go and make disciples of all nations

🙌 EXECUTE (So what? How does this affect my life?)

Principle: The Christian life is one of selfless unity, Scriptural hope, joyful endurance, and a global vision for the gospel.

  1. Build Others Up, Not Just Yourself
Are you helping others grow—or just seeking comfort? Mature believers carry the weak.
  2. Get Your Hope from God’s Word
When discouraged, run to Scripture. Let the promises of God anchor your soul.
  3. Pray for Unity in the Church
We’re strongest when we speak with one voice, glorifying God together—not arguing over differences.
  4. Live With a Missionary Mindset
Like Paul, seek to share Christ where He’s not known—whether across the globe or across the street.
  5. Pray Boldly and Expectantly
Paul needed prayer—and so do we. Pray for safety, favor, and fruit in your own mission.
