Romans 13 – Authority, Law, and Love

“Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities.” (Romans 13:1, NKJV)
“Love does no harm to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.” (Romans 13:10, NKJV)
🔍 CAPTURE THE SCENE (What do I see?)
In this chapter, Paul addresses:
- Submitting to governing authorities as those ordained by God.
- Recognizing rulers as servants of God for justice.
- Paying taxes and showing respect and honor.
- Fulfilling the law through love.
- Living with urgency—the day is far spent, and salvation is nearer.
- Casting off the works of darkness and putting on the armor of light.
- Walking properly and putting on the Lord Jesus Christ.
📖 ANALYZE THE MESSAGE (What does it mean?)
- Submit to Government Authorities (vv. 1–7)
All authority is from God. Those in power are meant to promote good and punish evil. Rebellion against lawful authority is rebellion against God. Pay taxes, respect leaders, and fulfill your civic duty unless it conflicts with God’s Word. - Love Fulfills the Law (vv. 8–10)
We owe no one anything—except to love. All commandments (don’t murder, steal, commit adultery, covet) are summed up in:
“You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”
Love does no harm, and therefore fulfills the law. - Live with Urgency (vv. 11–14)
Time is short. Wake up. The night is ending, and Jesus is coming. Lay aside sinful works and put on the armor of light. Don’t feed the flesh—put on Christ.
🔁 COMPARE THIS CHAPTER WITH THE REST OF SCRIPTURE

- 1 Thessalonians 5:5–8 – We are of the day… let us be sober
- Putting on Christ:
- Colossians 3:12–14 – Put on tender mercies, kindness, humility… above all, love

🙌 EXECUTE (So what? How does this affect my life?)
Principle: God calls you to be a faithful citizen, a loving neighbor, and a watchful servant dressed in the armor of light.
- Respect Authority Unless It Contradicts God
Submit to leaders—even those you disagree with—as long as obedience to God is not compromised. Your attitude reflects your trust in God’s sovereignty. - Let Love Be Your Only Ongoing Debt
Don’t live in financial or relational debt. Let love be your only continual obligation—and pay it in full every day. - Live Ready for Christ’s Return
Don’t sleep through your calling. Time is short. Live clean. Suit up for battle—the spiritual battle of faith and holiness. - Starve the Flesh—Feed the Spirit
Don’t make plans to indulge the flesh. Make plans to grow, serve, love, and put on Jesus every day.
