Notes – Revelation 5

Revelation 5 – The Worthy Lamb Takes the Scroll

“Worthy is the Lamb who was slain…” (Revelation 5:12, NKJV)
This chapter sets the stage for judgment by revealing the only One worthy to open the scroll of God’s final plan—Jesus, the Lamb.

🔍 CAPTURE THE SCENE (What do I see?)

  • God holds a scroll sealed with seven seals — no one in heaven or earth is worthy to open it
  • John begins to weep, but then sees the Lamb who was slain
  • All of heaven erupts in worship as Jesus takes the scroll
  • The focus is on the majesty of the Lamb, not just the judgment to come

📖 ANALYZE THE MESSAGE (What does it mean?)

1. The Sealed Scroll (vv. 1–4)

“A scroll written inside and on the back, sealed with seven seals…”
This scroll represents God’s judgment and redemption plan — the title deed to the earth
“No one was found worthy… and I wept much.”
Without someone worthy, God’s justice and promises cannot be fulfilled

2. The Lion Is the Lamb (vv. 5–7)

“Do not weep. Behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah… has prevailed.”
Jesus is called the Lion—the King and Conqueror
“I saw… a Lamb as though it had been slain…”
He appears as the sacrificial Lamb, emphasizing His atoning death

  • Seven horns = perfect power
  • Seven eyes = perfect wisdom and vision (Holy Spirit)

“He came and took the scroll…”
Only Jesus is worthy to carry out God’s plan

3. Heaven Worships the Lamb (vv. 8–14)

“The four living creatures and the 24 elders fell down before the Lamb…”
All creation bows in worship
“You are worthy… for You were slain, and have redeemed us to God…”
The Lamb is worshiped because He redeemed sinners from every tribe
“Worthy is the Lamb… to receive power and riches and wisdom…”
sevenfold doxology — total and complete worship
“Every creature… in heaven and on the earth… blessing and honor…”
Universal acknowledgment of Jesus’ worthiness
“The four living creatures said, ‘Amen!’”
Heaven agrees in unity on the supremacy of the Lamb

🔁 COMPARE THIS CHAPTER WITH THE REST OF SCRIPTURE

  • Jesus as the Lamb:
    • John 1:29 – “Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!”
    • Isaiah 53:7 – “He was led as a lamb to the slaughter”
    • 1 Peter 1:18–19 – “Redeemed… with the precious blood of Christ”
  • Jesus as the Lion:
    • Genesis 49:9–10 – Judah is a lion’s whelp; the scepter will not depart
    • Philippians 2:10–11 – Every knee will bow and every tongue confess
  • Heaven’s Worship:
    • Revelation 4:11 – Worthy are You, O Lord…
    • Psalm 96 – All creation worships the Lord

🙌 EXECUTE (So what? How does this affect my life?)

Principle: Jesus is worthy of worship because He alone defeated sin, redeemed humanity, and fulfills God’s plan.

  1. Worship the Lamb Daily
    • Make worship a lifestyle — not just music, but reverence and surrender
  2. Trust God’s Plan
    • Even when the scroll is sealed and the future feels uncertain, Jesus is in control
  3. Celebrate the Gospel
    • The cross is not just the starting point — it’s the center of heaven’s praise
  4. Join the Mission
    • You were redeemed from every tribe — and you’re called to go to every tribe
  5. Rest in His Authority
    • He alone is worthy — not governments, not leaders, not even you. He reigns
