Revelation 1 – The Revelation of Jesus Christ
“Behold, He is coming with clouds, and every eye will see Him…” (Revelation 1:7, NKJV)
This chapter introduces the book’s purpose: a revealing (Greek: apokalypsis) of Jesus Christ in glory—not as the suffering Servant, but the triumphant King.
🔍 CAPTURE THE SCENE (What do I see?)
- John opens with a greeting and blessing to the seven churches
- Jesus is introduced as eternal, faithful, and sovereign
- John receives a vision of the risen, glorified Christ
- Jesus commands him to write what he sees
- The chapter ends with a symbolic explanation of the seven lampstands and stars
📖 ANALYZE THE MESSAGE (What does it mean?)
1. The Purpose of Revelation (vv. 1–3)
“The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave Him to show His servants…”
This book is about unveiling Christ’s glory and God’s final plan
“Blessed is he who reads… and keeps those things…”
This is the only book that promises a blessing just for reading and obeying
2. A Greeting from the Triune God (vv. 4–6)
“Grace to you and peace from Him who is and who was and who is to come…”
- From the Father (eternal), the Spirit (sevenfold perfection), and Jesus Christ
“To Him who loved us and washed us from our sins…”
Jesus is praised for redeeming us and making us kings and priests
3. Christ’s Return Foretold (v. 7)
“Behold, He is coming with clouds, and every eye will see Him…”
- A clear declaration of the Second Coming, visible to all
- Even those who pierced Him (Israel and the nations) will see Him
4. Jesus Declares His Deity (v. 8)
“I am the Alpha and the Omega… the Almighty.”
Jesus claims eternality, sovereignty, and divinity
5. John’s Vision and Commission (vv. 9–11)
“I, John… was on the island of Patmos… for the word of God.”
- John was exiled for preaching the Gospel
“I was in the Spirit on the Lord’s Day…”
He is transported spiritually to receive this vision

Jesus gives the first of many direct commands to record
6. The Glorified Christ Appears (vv. 12–18)
“I saw seven golden lampstands… One like the Son of Man…”
- Jesus walks among His churches, symbolized by the lampstands
Description:
- White hair = eternal wisdom
- Eyes like fire = all-seeing holiness
- Bronze feet = judgment
- Voice like many waters = power and majesty
- Right hand = holds the seven stars (church leaders)
- Double-edged sword = Word of God
- Face shining = divine glory
“I am He who lives, and was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore.”
Christ identifies Himself as the Resurrected Lord with authority over death
7. Explanation of the Symbols (v. 20)
“The mystery of the seven stars… and the seven golden lampstands…”
- Stars = angels/messengers of the churches
- Lampstands = the churches themselves
