Psalm 23 – The Lord is My Shepherd
“The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.” (Psalm 23:1, NKJV)
“Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.” (v. 4)
“Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.” (v. 6)

- Psalm 23 is one of the most well-known and cherished psalms, often associated with comfort, protection, and provision from God
- David expresses his trust in God as his shepherd, guiding and providing for him in every situation, from green pastures to the darkest valleys
- The psalm describes God as a loving shepherd who cares for His sheep, provides rest, and offers protection in times of danger
- It portrays a personal relationship with God, who walks with His people, comforts them, and offers them eternal security in His presence
- The psalm ends with a confident affirmation of God’s goodness, mercy, and the eternal hope of being with God forever
📖 ANALYZE THE MESSAGE (What does it mean?)
1. The Lord is My Shepherd (v. 1)
“The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.”
David begins by declaring that God is his shepherd, meaning that God provides for him, guides him, and protects him. Because of God’s care, David lacks nothing; God fulfills all his needs
Key point: The imagery of a shepherd points to God’s care, as a shepherd provides for, leads, and protects the sheep, similar to how God provides and guides His people
2. God’s Provision and Rest (vv. 2–3)
“He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters.”
God provides rest and peace for David. The green pastures symbolize abundant provision, and the still waters signify peaceful refreshment. God’s care allows David to rest, knowing that his needs are met
“He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake.”
God restores David’s soul, offering spiritual renewal. He also leads David in the right paths, ensuring that David walks in the way that honors God and aligns with His righteousness
3. Comfort in the Valley of Death (v. 4)
“Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.”
Even in the most dark and dangerous times, David is not afraid because he knows that God is with him. The valley of the shadow of death represents moments of suffering, danger, and death, but David trusts in God’s presence and protection
The rod and staff are tools of a shepherd, used for guiding the sheep and defending them from threats. David takes comfort in knowing that God will guide and protect him, even in the darkest times
Key point: God’s presence is the ultimate comfort in times of fear and danger. No matter the difficulty, God is with His people, providing strength and protection
4. God’s Provision in the Presence of Enemies (v. 5)
“You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; my cup runs over.”
God provides for David’s needs even in the face of his enemies. A table of abundance is prepared for him, and his head is anointed with oil, a symbol of blessing, honor, and favor. David’s cup runs over, symbolizing abundant blessings that overflow
Key point: God provides not only in times of peace but also in times of danger and opposition, showing His faithfulness in every situation
5. God’s Goodness and Mercy (v. 6)
“Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.”
David is confident that God’s goodness (His favor and blessings) and mercy (His love and forgiveness) will follow him all the days of his life. David’s eternal hope is to dwell in God’s presence forever, which is his ultimate desire
Key point: The psalm ends with a confident affirmation of God’s eternal faithfulness, offering David (and believers) the assurance of God’s constant presence and eternal security in His house

- John 10:11 – Jesus says, “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep.” Jesus is the ultimate shepherd, offering protection, guidance, and sacrifice for His followers
