Luke 2 – The Birth of Jesus and the Shepherds

“And she brought forth her firstborn Son, and wrapped Him in swaddling cloths, and laid Him in a manger…” (Luke 2:7, NKJV)
“Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, goodwill toward men!” (v. 14)
“For my eyes have seen Your salvation…” (v. 30)
🔍 CAPTURE THE SCENE (What do I see?)
- The birth of Jesus is marked by humility and simplicity — born in a manger in Bethlehem
- Caesar Augustus orders a census, which brings Mary and Joseph to Bethlehem
- The angels proclaim Jesus’ birth to shepherds, announcing peace and goodwill
- Simeon and Anna recognize Jesus as the promised Messiah, and they offer praise and prophecy
- The chapter contrasts God’s plan of salvation with the humility of Jesus’ birth
📖 ANALYZE THE MESSAGE (What does it mean?)
1. The Birth of Jesus (vv. 1–7)
“And it came to pass in those days that a decree went out from Caesar Augustus…”
A census forces Mary and Joseph to go to Bethlehem, fulfilling the prophecy of the Messiah’s birth there
“She brought forth her firstborn Son, and wrapped Him in swaddling cloths…”
Jesus is born in a humble manger, a symbol of His humility
“Because there was no room for them in the inn.”
Jesus is born in the most humble of circumstances, showing that God’s kingdom is not about wealth or power
2. The Angels Announce Jesus’ Birth (vv. 8–14)
“Now there were in the same country shepherds living out in the fields…”
Shepherds are the first to hear the good news of Jesus’ birth, illustrating that Jesus came for the humble and lowly
“And behold, an angel of the Lord stood before them…”
The angel proclaims the Savior’s birth, and multitudes of the heavenly host praise God for His glory
“Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, goodwill toward men!”
The birth of Jesus is an announcement of peace between God and mankind — the Prince of Peace is here
3. The Shepherds Visit Jesus (vv. 15–20)
“Let us now go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has come to pass…”
The shepherds are filled with wonder and go to see the child lying in the manger
“And when they had seen Him, they made widely known the saying which was told them concerning this Child.”
The shepherds spread the good news about Jesus, glorifying and praising God
“But Mary kept all these things and pondered them in her heart.”
Mary reflects on the revelation she’s received, deeply moved by the angelic message and the reality of her Son
4. The Circumcision and Naming of Jesus (vv. 21)
“And when eight days were completed for the circumcision of the Child, His name was called Jesus…”
Jesus is circumcised in obedience to the Law of Moses, marking Him as part of the covenant people of Israel
5. Simeon’s Prophecy (vv. 22–35)
“Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon…”
Simeon, a devout man, had been promised by the Holy Spirit that he would see the Messiah before he died
“For my eyes have seen Your salvation…”
Simeon rejoices as he sees Jesus, recognizing Him as the salvation of Israel
“A light to bring revelation to the Gentiles, and the glory of Your people Israel.”
Simeon prophesies that Jesus will bring light to both the Jewish people and to the Gentiles, fulfilling the promise of salvation for all nations
6. Anna’s Prophecy (vv. 36–38)
“There was one, Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel…”
Anna, an elderly prophetess, recognizes Jesus as the Redeemer and speaks about Him to all who were waiting for the redemption of Jerusalem
7. The Return to Nazareth (vv. 39–40)
“So when they had performed all things according to the law of the Lord…”
Mary and Joseph return to Nazareth, and Jesus grows in wisdom, stature, and favor with God and men

- Humility of Jesus’ Birth:
- Philippians 2:6–8 – Jesus humbled Himself and took on the nature of a servant
