John 17 – The High Priestly Prayer of Jesus
“Father, the hour has come. Glorify Your Son, that Your Son also may glorify You.” (John 17:1, NKJV)
🔍 CAPTURE THE SCENE (What do I see?)
This chapter is a sacred moment. Jesus is no longer speaking to the crowd or the disciples—He’s speaking to the Father. His mission is nearly complete. He lifts His eyes to heaven and prays three key petitions:
1. Jesus prays for Himself (vv. 1–5)
- The hour has come—Jesus prays for glory, not for pride, but to glorify the Father.
- He defines eternal life:“That they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.”
- He declares His mission complete:“I have finished the work.”
2. Jesus prays for His disciples (vv. 6–19)
- He thanks the Father for the disciples given to Him.
- He asks for their protection, unity, and sanctification.
- He doesn’t pray for the world, but for those the Father gave Him.
- He prays they would be in the world but not of it.
- He prays they would be sanctified by truth—God’s Word.
3. Jesus prays for future believers—you and me (vv. 20–26)
- He asks that all who believe in Him through the disciples’ word would be one.
- He desires that we would be with Him and see His glory.
- He ends by expressing the Father’s love:“That the love with which You loved Me may be in them.”
📖 ANALYZE THE MESSAGE (What does it mean?)
- Jesus’ Definition of Eternal Life (v. 3)
Eternal life isn’t just duration—it’s relationship: knowing God personally through Christ. - Jesus Prays for Glory Through Obedience (vv. 1–5)
The cross was hours away. Jesus sees it not as defeat but as glory, because it accomplishes redemption. - The Disciples Are a Gift (vv. 6–10)
Jesus sees His followers as a treasure, given by the Father. If you’re in Christ, you are part of His joy. - In the World, Not of It (vv. 11–19)
Jesus doesn’t remove us from the world—but asks the Father to protect and set us apart through truth. - Unity Reflects the Trinity (vv. 20–23)
The unity of believers shows the world that Jesus was sent by God. Our love and oneness are evidence of the gospel. - Love Is the Final Desire (vv. 24–26)
Jesus wants us with Him and filled with the love the Father has for Him. You are deeply loved.

Principle: Jesus prayed for you. His deepest desire was that you would know Him, live in unity with other believers, and be filled with the love of the Father.
- Pursue Relationship, Not Just Religion
Eternal life is knowing God. Spend time with Him. Let that intimacy define your walk. - Stay in the World—but Stay Rooted in Truth
You’re not called to escape the world—but to stand out in it. Be anchored in Scripture, not culture. - Make Unity a Priority
Disunity dishonors the gospel. Fight for reconciliation and humility within the body of Christ. - Live as One Who Is Loved
You are loved with the same love the Father has for the Son. That truth changes everything. - Be Encouraged—Jesus Prayed for You
Before the cross, He saw you. He prayed for your faith, your unity, and your future.
