James 4 – Humility Before the Lord

“God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” (James 4:6, NKJV)
“Submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.” (James 4:7, NKJV)
🔍 CAPTURE THE SCENE (What do I see?)
This chapter directly confronts:
- Fleshly desires that lead to conflict
- Friendship with the world as hostility toward God
- The call to humble repentance
- Warnings against judging others
- Rebuke of boastful, presumptive plans
James pulls no punches. He exposes pride and self-reliance and calls believers back to a surrendered, dependent walk with the Lord.
📖 ANALYZE THE MESSAGE (What does it mean?)
1. The Source of Conflict (vv. 1–3)
Why are there fights and quarrels? Not because of others—but because of our own desires for pleasure that war within us.
“You lust and do not have. You murder and covet and cannot obtain.” (v. 2)
Even when we pray, we don’t receive because we ask with wrong motives—to spend it on our own pleasures.
2. Friendship with the World = Enmity with God (vv. 4–5)
“Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.” (v. 4)
James uses sharp language: adulterers and adulteresses—those who cheat on their relationship with God by loving the world.
The Spirit within us yearns jealously—God desires our full devotion.
3. God Gives Grace to the Humble (vv. 6–10)
“God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.”
The solution:
- Submit to God
- Resist the devil — and he will flee
- Draw near to God — and He will draw near to you
- Cleanse your hands, purify your hearts, weep, mourn, and humble yourself
“Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up.” (v. 10)
4. Do Not Judge a Brother (vv. 11–12)
There’s only one Lawgiver and Judge — God.
When you speak evil of or judge your brother, you set yourself above the law.
You’re not helping the law—you’re usurping God’s role.
5. Do Not Boast About Tomorrow (vv. 13–17)
James rebukes arrogance in planning:
“Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city…”
But you don’t even know what will happen tomorrow.
“For what is your life? It is even a vapor…” (v. 14)
Instead, we should say:
“If the Lord wills, we shall live and do this or that.” (v. 15)
To know the right thing and not do it = sin.
